Fried banana leaves ?
No, and I can hardly believe it! I watered the whole yard heavily including the lawn (front side and back) and the bamboo for 3 days straight hoping the extra humidity would help save the leaves and it appears to have worked!
I do have some plants that just melted and are laying down flat on the ground now, but the bananas did really well! :)

We have a late season visitor in the form of Hurricane Tomas who should be passing us by on Tuesday on his way to Jamaica!!! At the moment St Lucia and St Vincent have the pleasure of his company and the forcasters aren't sure whether he will continue west and pass to the south of us, or turn north and cross Haiti. We might get this years beach hurricane party after all.

Well - now he has slowed down and split into 2 - one going through the channel between Cuba and Haiti, and the other coming up the Cibao valley across our half of the island overnight tonight on Friday. Just overcast all the time with light rain and mild gusts of wind so far. Projected to pass us in the middle of the night (of course!) and we fear the rain more than the wind. I just wish my hugely tall Sabas didn't have such big bunches of fruit on them!! It is nearly 5pm and getting really dark - no beach party for this one!

So cold here today! Really damp and light rain (and some sleet) persisted throughout the entire day. We were suppose to freeze today, but the coldest we got was only 37F. No killing frost yet thankfully. My cannas still have a bloom or 2 and are green and lots of people have tropical plants (such as impatients, begonias, mandevillas, and palms) still doing good outside! Yesterdays drizzling rain turned to snow about 9 pm. W/ 40 mph gusts it was blizzard last night & today. All of Wisconsin was sorta state of emergency...further north had 2 ft snow.
The sat dish went out last night - too much snow on it so I taped 3 bamboo poles together & hit the dish on roof LOL. It looked like I was fishing - casting out. I got some off & tv came back in. Then power out. Lights kept flickering like I've never seen, & then totally out. Good thing we have a wood burner. Power came back about 3:20 am. A transformer caught fire. Now everything is frozen & we will have a wind chill of minus 20F. The slush under the snow froze & it's very slippery driving.
It was a winter wonderland here this morn & all day...with that heavy wet snow, it stuck to everything...weighting down lots of branches. Very pretty.

My plants are all doing well outside though and my bougainvillea is pushing out blooms (and my musa basjoo is actually pushing up its new leaf more and more every day!). Got an idea of what the sun looks like for about 10 mins this afternoon so I went and took the banana out for some fresh.
Its the wind thats doing a lot to the garden. Its been very wet and I would use Provado for the bugs but not Ideal in the rain.
Feeding a water based feed is useless so a slow release.
Last week It was so windy I tried to dig up the Maple but its roots were well and truely anchored deep. They hate wind and It was bending in half.
Surely summer will come, when it does it will be a scorcher, I know it..

Well. Some are in pots that have good draining soil and some are planted in the ground, solid clay. Just like bananas the more tropical need better drainage than the others. Also some of my Passion Vines are more hardy then the books say. Again like bananas once they get established they can take lower temperatures.

thats encouraging sunfish..
i know i'll have to bring in passion vines here..(overwintering)
im thinking a good soil mix would be small bark, perlite and compost..
? what do u think?
i guess the US weather is being affected by this la Nina from pacific
tropics.. sigh
tried to see "forcasts" of what could follow for the summer months...
if there is "typical" follow up weather after a la Nina ..some say..warmer
drier..some say a return to "normal" regional weather..
lol
guess its whatever shows up..
i do hope it is a good..long summer..
id love for my tropicals to have as much warm/sunny weather to
get BIG !!!!

That mix sounds good to me. I use peat or coir with 30 to 40% perlite.
You could try and get real fancy, check out Al's mix.

Weather here in our neck of the woods is fairly nice, 90 for high and 70 for low, with a shower almost every evening. The grass is growing and the cattle love it. The rains will help us get the pastures back in shape as the dry spring season really took its toll. Not complaining since there are many who are in big trouble because of the drought in their area. Our prayers and wishes go out to them.

Only slight chance of rain up here but my 101 acres of seedling alfalfa really needs some. And, as Tony said, it would bring warmer temperatures which would also be great.
Edit: my Wunderground banner shows 54F but it's 49F here at 4:18. brrrrr

Yeah, same here, I don't remember every having so many consecutive cold days, though we've had much lower temps than this for a few days. It got down to 29.4F the other day while the coldest in the past 20 years was in January 2007 when it got down to 20.4F one day and there was a period of around 48 hours or so where we didn't even get above freezing. Back around 1967 (+/- 2 years) our swimming pool got about a half inch of ice on it and I don't think it's ever been that cold since.

Ante, I'm don't have historical weather data for my precise location. Wunderground has data for Fairfield which is about 25 miles to the west of me where they show the average low for yesterday as being 39F but that they had a record low of 26F. I don't think that we got that cold but I was sleeping at the time we would have hit the low (went to bed after watching the lunar eclipse). I can't find what the averages are for particular months but would guess it's in the upper 30s for late December through January and our lows are usually around 28F which we might hit a few times a year. Last year was a cold year and we had about 20 days of frost and it looks like we will beat that as we've had 7 consecutive days now plus 2 days on 11/8 and 11/9. The lowest low I can remember in the past 30 years was in January 2007 at 20.4F. With lows down to 26F last year all of my bananas in the ground still came back (about 12 varieties, I'd guess). I now have about 20 varieties in the ground and expect some of them to die (I still need to get around to digging up my Ae Ae which I'll chop and split up and re-pot). In January 2007 I had 4 banana plants of 3 varieties (all mislabeled, so I don't know what they were for sure). One of them died completely while the other 3 died to the ground but sprouted up new pups in the spring. Last year with my low of 26F pretty much all grew back from the pseudostem which was in place from the prior fall but sometimes I need to chop a bit off as they new growth gets stuck in the dried up top.

Strange weather here, we have been getting rain, but I don't think it is associated with a cold front. 2" of rain since Friday, but apparently the people on the Treasure Coast got flooded out yesterday. Highs in the upper 70s, lows in the low to mid-60s. Seems to be more of a caribbean pattern.

Got down to 24F in my yard last night. It was cold compared to what I have been used to this fall! My tender tropical plants got zapped for the first time this year. My Musa basjoo which was days away from opening a new leaf also got frost damaged so the new leaf is brown.
Something that I thought was interesting is that my Passiflora has no damage at all. Its still completely green and its in a very cold spot in my yard. I didn't know that they stayed evergreen even in freezing weather.
No more hard freezes for the next 10 days. Although one night will go back down to 29F again.
Its slowly getting very winter like, but I still have potted palms and other plants outside that are doing well and since its already mid December, I cant complain! We are just a week away from the official start of winter!

In central Florida, about 25 miles inland of the Gulf, temps are decent, 80 high 50 low. Some rain but most of it drops on the east coast. No frost here yet and we are watching the weather full time since we have almost 60 plants outside. Most are in pots and easy to move but the others will get covered. Sometimes it looks like halloween with so many plants covered with sheets. Stay warm.

Still lots of green leaves, more than I'd expect, actually. Some of the more sensitive types look worse than others. I'll take a photo in a bit. So far, I think we've had about an inch of rain since September. We should have at least a couple inches more by now.

I can't say for sure if my banana garden has had frost or not. I stood on the garage roof to take the first photo and it's had heavy frost on it 10 times so far this year. I've moved most of my bananas over closer to my pool in hopes that it will serve as a heat bank and aid them (sure seems to help the Senorita which is leaning over the pool). With the pool to the south and the redwood trees to the west and my house to the east, that might keep the area slightly warmer. Some plants still look pretty bad, though. The Ensete muarelii is just on the other side of the palm and is looking pretty bad and my Ae Ae is real bad. The Dwarf Namwah and Raja puri also look worse than I had expected. My variegated Tanee (sp?) doesn't look to swift either and I need to dig up a pup of that as a backup and move it into my greenhouse. My Namwah (tall) is looking pretty good.

That's 10 frosts! We had frost on 11/8 and 11/9 and then in 8 of the past 9 days. Each time the roof of my house had a solid blanket of frost. Most mornings were 32F or higher but we got down to 29.4F one morning last week.

I think it warms faster due to the channeling of the ocean air to our neighborhood via the Santa Monica freeway and the slight valley it runs along. We are 7 miles to the ocean. The freeway makes a bend north just below our neighborhood and wraps around it bringing an ocean breeze. At least that what I've always thought!

Something weird going on there Harvey. It only takes one frost here to wipe out all my leaves. Big Tony just lost his leaves to one frost. He's located in the Valley somewhere.

Maybe because they are "hardened off" here with cold weather preceding the frosts. I think if a banana is growing vigorously and hit with a frost it's probably more likely to see damage. I took a photo of my garage roof this morning. My garage is unheated. My house didn't have frost on the roof that I could see (the attic is insulated but not very well).

It's a little more than a theory, though I don't know if it applies to bananas. On fruit and nut trees, they can suffer significant damage if the encounter freezing weather when they are not dormant. The phloem will freeze and cells rupture. Damage to my leaves are very apparent but just don't show up very well in those photos. I'll try to take more.
The frosty weather results in leaves dropping off of my chestnuts and pomegranates which means I'll soon get busy pruning. One year we had fierce winds and rains that blew over some chestnut trees as they hadn't dropped off their leaves yet. That certainly won't be a problem this year.
