Believe me I need some sun. It's been way to wet and damp for my in ground banana plants.I'm going to have to do something about my clay soil it stays way to wet.
Clay is the only reason my grass doesn't die in the summer. Today was very Nice. Tomorrow will be better yet :^)

Its still cold in St Louis MO (in the 30s during the day), but at least the sun is supposed to be out the next 3 days. We had about 3 inches of snow yesterday, about half of it has melted. I am ready for spring.

Clay is the only reason my grass doesn't die in the summer. Today was very Nice. Tomorrow will be better yet :^)
My soil is pretty much all clay in St Louis. Over the past 2 years I have dug up about 2/3 of the clay in my planting beds, I mixed in planting mix, sand and pea gravel. Having raised beds also helps alot. The MO botanical garden told me to leave 1/3 of the clay in with the mixed soil so that the plants know what to do when the roots expand into the clay.
I have a 5 foot tall mound of clay dirt behind my shed that I need to get rid of. Does any one want some clay soil, if you want to come and get it you can have it. Ha Ha.

Well I am back at it, here in Minnesota. The weather in Florida was down right chilly, both in Miami and Daytona, but was very glad to get back to the ocean and get my fill of salt air. Looks like things are about normal for here, they are saying March is to be very mild so.....to celebrate my return to Minnesota I ordered a Windmill Palm and bought a beautiful Cymbidium, I am happy camper!:woohoonaner:
We have another night of freezing coming mid week--that is really late for a freeze here. Still no 70s, but I did see the first sign of spring today--Daffodils were blooming in the yard.

Well we hit 70F(twice) but have a good chance of having snow 3 of next 5 days, today being one of them.. Talk about some wacky weather!
A couple days ago we were suppose to get down to 30 on Wed night, but yesterday they dropped that to 25! We had a few days in 60s with lows in the 40s, but that is average at best for this time of yr.

Back in Sept., whoever forecasted the El Nino effect was right on. Warmer than usuall winter around here, & cold & rainy in the SE. We didn't even get much snow - well, not like usual.
El Nino is a pretty dominant climate driver, especially when it is strong like this one. This one is still getting stronger, the current temperature difference in the Pacific Ocean where they measure is 1.8 degrees C. They are predicting it will weaken by summer, but it can last for years.
I just hope that what I read about this being a different kind that does not protect us from hurricanes is wrong--I would much rather have a cold winter than a hurricane.

Well a cold winter helps...not having a good one.. It's going to take a good portion of the summer to warm the gulf back up to where it feeds the hurricane.. If the jet streams all go back to normal? I guess we could all use some rain :^) (All day long today)

Strange year here for weather check this out now after having some nice days.
...ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS LATE THIS AFTERNOON AND TONIGHT...
...PATCHY FROST POSSIBLE TUESDAY NIGHT AND WEDNESDAY NIGHT...
A VERY COLD LOW PRESSURE AREA ALOFT WILL MOVE ACROSS THE VALLEY
THIS EVENING AND TONIGHT. THIS LOW WILL BRING SCATTERED SHOWERS
AND THE THREAT OF AN ISOLATED THUNDERSTORM OR TWO. SMALL HAIL MAY
ACCOMPANY ANY SHOWERS OR THUNDERSTORMS.
FOR TUESDAY NIGHT AND WEDNESDAY NIGHT...THERE IS CONSIDERABLE
UNCERTAINTY ON HOW MUCH...IF ANY CLOUD COVER THERE WILL BE. A
RATHER COLD AIRMASS WILL BE IN PLACE BY TUESDAY...AND ANY CLEAR
SKIES AT NIGHT WILL BRING A THREAT FOR FROST...ESPECIALLY OUTSIDE
OF URBAN AREAS. THE BEST CHANCE FOR A POTENTIAL WIDESPREAD FROST
IS WEDNESDAY NIGHT.
ANYONE THAT HAS FROST SENSITIVE PLANTS THAT HAVE BEGUN TO LEAF OUT
OR BLOOM SHOULD PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE FORECAST THE NEXT FEW
DAYS.

With all this crazy weather and below normal temps I surely hope so!!! Our low in the 10-day forecast is 40 on Saturday... I think that's to close to a frost point for me... What's up with us having a real spring.. We never get that.. Normal it goes from cool to hot....to funny.. Patience is a good friend these days... lol Of course it decided to rain all day good thing I had time to remedy the plants before it started :^)

I was planting some figs and suddenly a storm came through in a dramatic fashion. There is a tall row of eucalytpus trees along the western edge of my property (planted a hundred years ago as a wind break) and they started making a lot of noise because of wind/rain/hail so I grabbed my stuff and headed for my pickup but still got pretty wet before getting inside. About 15 minutes later the sun was out and I went back and finished planting my figs. :)

That seems cold for Boston for April. I would definately bring bananas in if they were indoors for the winter. If you overwintered in the ground then just cover them up again.
Its been a very warm spring in St Louis, 86 yesterday, the same today and tomorrrow. Lowest temp in 10 day forcast is 42, other than that in the 50s at night.

I wish it would rain here in St Louis. Its been sunny and in the mid 80s. i have been watering my banana plants daily. They say they prefer rain water over my hard tap water. I have a rain barrell and its been empty for a week. I might have to start doing an indian rain dance soon.
The summer like weather we have been having has given my bananas an early start this spring. My banana's are at least 2 weeks ahead of last year. 2 basjoos that I overwintered in the ground are already 6 feet tall !!!!!!

I have some work to do on seeding the lawn, etc in the mean time. It seems like the projects never end. Its been in the 80s all week and no rain. Well the I-can't-really-pronounce-it's-name-volcano gave us lots and lots of small glass shrapnels flying around, so the vapor coming up loses energy on those pieces, condensates and voila, we have the rain all week long. I haven't seen the sun for almost 5 days straight. Needless to say that thousands of people are losing their battle with water and flooding is present in 78% of Central Europe. Thanks, Iceland!

This one is just a tropical wave and won't make it to a hurricane, but it is slow moving and it will dump huge amounts of rain on us, causing the usual flooding and landslips. Unusual weather this month especially for this time of year. We have had wonderfully hot (natch) and humid (natch) sunny days, but with torrential thunderstorms at night. Here are the rainfall figures for the last few years and you can see why some of the nanas have some splits in their trunks this year - in spite of them loving the rain. I can't post the table unfortunately.
2007 2008 2009 2010 to end June
112.35 95.45 86.8 83.3
In June this year we had 22.5 inches of rain instead of the usual 2-3 inches with anything up to 5 inches a night - no wonder the grass is dying!
And the current hurricane didn't even come near us - so nothing from that.

90F RIGHT NOW IN NYC AT 11:15 pm. Low temperature will probably be around 80F-85F which is extremely warm. I mean a LOW temperature in the 80s is pretty tropical! Now the high temperatures in the triple digits is not so tropical (the true tropics very rarely if ever gets to 100F).

Superstorm from the western Europe will come tomorrow. The first heat rains came yesterday though. They watered the nature and the air is extremely moist now - literally squeezable.
Tony, wow, if I were you, I would surely sue the cable, electric distribution and telephone company for those cables hanging above your garden. Just wow. :)
No stroms in sight here, but temps were very high in the last three days. Yesterday we had 37,3° C (equals 99.1° F).
The humidity slowly increased over the last days, which is good for the nanners. Before we had lows of only 30 % during the day. Now it's 50 % during the day.
The air was so dry, that my Basjoo and my Sikkimensis had spider mites - outside on the balcony. Usually they appear only in winter and inside. But I got rid of them with spraying a little "soft posion". Now they shouldn't reappear in the more humid air.
Today is not so hot. We only have 33° C/92° F and a few clouds. Maybe we'll get some rain tonight! My newly planted Rajapuri in the ground would love it!

After days of 100 F weather, today a cold front passed through and dropped the temps to the 80's. Unfortunately, this spawned super thunderstorms that really did a number on our area. Over 260,000 customers have lost power (including yours truly) due to downed power lines and fallen trees. Winds were ferocious; around 75 mph. My backyard is littered with boughs and stems from my tall tulip poplars. I filled two lawn litter garbage cans for collection tomorrow. I just got power back, but since it's been around 12 hours without electricity, I'll probably have to dump half of my refrigerator contents. Hopefully the freezers will still be OK. I drove out looking for dinner for us, and had to drive over 20 miles before there were lights on!

Wow, Howard, hope you didn't have any significant damage.
This is one of the windier nights for us for the summer, probably around 25-30mph. No storms, just a "delta breeze", as they call it. There is a row of very old red gum eucalpytus on the west edge of my property (500' or so west of my house). On nights like tonight, it sounds like we're living right next to the ocean with strong surf action drowning out the sound of highway traffic, etc. We're down to 62F at 10:30 and will get below 60 tonight. Not banana weather!

I looked out during the peak of the storm and watched my basjoo clump whipping in every direction. Surprisingly, when I went out to clean up, very few torn leaves! Its a tough plant!
And we were lucky. A 6 year old boy was killed when a tree toppled on to the minivan he was in. Waves in the Potomac swamped a boat with 7 people aboard; 2 were rescued by another boater, and the 5 remaining made it the 300 yards to shore safely. As soon as the storm started, I heard every ambulance and fire equipment siren going off. Very lucky, thank G-d.

Expected to be 104F today. Got down to the upper 60s last night, which was refreshing.
Greg, I'm surprised that a forecast for Fresno would show lows in the 50s at this time of year. That happens here during some summer nights, but not when we're experiencing hot conditions like this. We get a lot of air flowing in from the SF Bay to help cool us off.

Today looks like it will live up to its billing as the hottest day of the year. At 1 p.m., it was 97 degrees in Sacramento, and the predicted high of 105 seemed well within sweaty reach.
Elsewhere in the region, the early afternoon temperatures were: 100 degrees in Elk Grove, 99 in Folsom, 97 in Davis and 97 degrees in Cool.
A strong high-pressure system built this morning, and the compressed atmosphere was cooking the Sacramento Valley, where highs were expected to range from 105 to 110 degrees.
The sudden-onset heat wave contrasts dramatically with the overall summer conditions, which have been relatively cool. Sacramento has had few 100-degree days and topped out with 103 degrees on July 16.
Today's predicted high is not a record for the date. That would be the 108 degrees that most recently caused the capital to sizzle in 1931.
High temperatures on Wednesday are expected to be about the same as today or a couple of degrees cooler, National Weather Service forecasters predict.
The hot spell will begin to wane Thursday, and highs will drop precipitously day by day until Sacramento is kissed by a high in the high 70s Saturday, NWS meteorologists say.
The updated Sacramento forecast:
This afternoon: Sunny and hot, with a high near 105. Northwest wind about 7 mph.
Tonight: Clear, with a low around 66. Northwest wind to 6 mph becoming calm.
Wednesday: Sunny and hot, high near 105. Calm wind becoming west/southwest to 6 mph.
Wednesday night: Clear, low about 61. South/southwest wind 8-11 mph.
Thursday: Sunny, high near 94. South wind to 9 mph.
Thursday night: Mostly clear, low about 56.
Friday: Sunny, high near 86.
Friday night: Clear, low about 53.
Saturday: Sunny, high near 77.
Saturday night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 52.
Sunday: Mostly sunny, high near 74.

Although the official hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, our hurricane season starts when the weather from the Cape Verde region pushes the weather systems down the Atlantic - usually about September 1.
And here they are - just about on time! Currently we have Earl with his closest approach to the north coast of the Dominican Republic upgraded from 900 miles to 286 miles today, and behind him is the next system soon to be called Fiona. They come off the African coast like bowling balls at this time of the year - and it might be time start preparations for the hurricane party for Earl!
Who thought that weather could be such fun!!
