I'm not counting the 3 or 4 kinds that I dug up to get rid of and threw back by my fence. They have since sprouted from the corm and are rooted back in the ground again!

I didn't realize how many I have gotten rid of until I listed the ones that I know I still have left. A few years ago I had almost 40 different kinds and now only 15 are left!

Mike,

Kanderian is the hands down winner, ripening in 12 weeks. It had a nice size bunch and nice sized fruit, and very brilliant yellow color. Everything else is roughly 6 months and more.

Momese,

Right on!! I don't have a backyard, so it is all in the front one.

I agree with the rest if you. I did away with the grass in the backyard several years ago. This year I attacked the lawn in the front yard. In another year there will be no grass to cut and only bananas to enjoy.

The front and side yard earlier this year.

Wow! What a beautiful sight! What type of bananas are they? My guess would be Saba for most of them, but the one plant with the bronze undersides is throwing me off.

Thanks for sharing an excellent pic.

GATrops

Sodak-Thanks for the kind words.

There is a Saba in the mix but it is not actually visible in this photo. (There are actually a good many other plants in the backyard and other side of the house that are not visible in the photo.)

The varieties are (supposed to be) from far left to right:

Rose, Goldfinger (FHIA-1) and Grand Nain (all behind fence)

Sweetheart (FHIA-3), Mona Lisa (FHIA-2), Goldfinger (FHIA-1), Praying Hands, Misi Luki, Red Iholene, Dwarf Namwah, SH 3640 and Dwarf Brazilian (side of house in front of fence)

Mahoi, FHIA-18, FHIA-23, Raja Puri, Dwarf Orinoco, Dwarf Plantain, Jamican Red, Dwarf Cavendish and FHIA-17. (other side of driveway, it is kind of hard to make out all the plants on that side but there are 9 varieties in that grouping)

The one with the bronze undersides to the leaves is the Red Iholene. The bloom on that variety is also very attractive. The bloom had not yet emerged when the picture was taken (around mid-July).

These are the bananas I'm "attempting" to grow here in Indiana:

dwarf cavendish
orinoco
namwah
basjoo
ensete ventricosum maurellii
sdc high color mini
pink velutina
chinese yellow
ice cream
zebrina
gran nain
unknowns which are probably one of the above
raja puri
sumatrana X gran nain cross

I have three 12 foot tall orinocos in the garage in storage, along with 60 others, surely I'll be "actually growing", having fruit next year!
We do love the beautiful tropical foliage all around the patio and ponds though, regardless of fruit.

My hat is off to Sandy. I can't imagine moving 60 bananas to storage. I moved 12 large ones in one day (with the holes already prepared) and it nearly killed me.

Pitangadiego-I am very interested to hear of your experience with Kanderian. I am thinking about adding that one to the group this spring. Do I understand you correctly that it matures in around 12 weeks from blooming for you? What is a normal height for Kanderian in your part of the world? How would you rate the fruit? Is it similar to Orinoco and/or Pelipita?

tdl462
12-02-2005, 11:34 AM
As for me the bananas I'm "attempting" to grow are, Basjoo, Orinoco, and Saba. This was my first year so I'm still learning.
My hat is off to those with so many different types, there are some real Banana freaks here :D :D :D and yes thats a good thing.

GATrops, I love that photo! From the looks of it, it won't be long til the house will be completely hidden in the jungle! What are the white things at the base of the plants?

GATrops
12-02-2005, 06:08 PM
Mitchel,

Thanks for the encouragement. That is my goal, to be unable to see the house for the banana plants. (About one more year should just about do it.)

You have a very good eye. The white things are name tags for the variety of banana.

Kanderian was a very good size, and large bunch. It did start to ripen 3months after it showed the first hand in the flower. Pix are at my old post at http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/banana/msg0317084730574.html

I tried uploading a pix here but "file was too large".

pitangadiego, from the looks of the pictures you posted in the other thread you have quite an amazing little jungle, but I can't see how you fit all those plants you have listed on your web site in that one area. Do you have another spot where you grow or just the front yard? I also see that your house doesn't seem to fit the general home design theme for your street. Did you build a new home and set it back off the street? Any more pics that show the jungle, like looking from across the street?

I started my banana growing back in February...currently I have:

Goldfinger
Dwarf Red Jamaican
Dwarf Namwah
Dwarf Namwah Pearl
Praying Hands
Mona Lisa
Dwarf Orinoco
Dwarf Brazilian
Double Mahoi
FHIA-18
Saba
Rose
Velutina

So far only the orinoco has fruited, the brazilian has a flower now and am excited to try that fruit! Hopefully everything will have fruited within the year of planting!

Momese,

The house has always been at the back of the lot, to take advantage of the view, since before we bought it. I started with citrus and peaches, plums, etc planted at 15' centers, and added mangos, figs, che, jujube, etc inbetween. Then I added bananas inbetween all that, and well as replacing a few things that had not done well. You do need a machete to navigate out there. That is why, no matter what you take a picture of, there will be a banana tree in the picture as well. See http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/banana/msg0722342421527.html wherethe bananas appear to be growing on a tangerine tree.

I also have some space down our back hill, but that is mostly avocados, pitangas, guavas, sapote, sugar cane, some peaches and apples, and now at the bottom is my fig collection, about 75 varieties in ground on about 6-7' centers, and pruned to be short and bushy. But the bananas are all up on the flat where they are proctected from the wind, somewhat, by the house.

Momese, et al,

Visitors are always welcome. I am usually home on Saturdays (baring weddings, school events and such - wedding this Saturday) and can usually accomodate some weekday times. So, drop me a note when you are going to be in town.

I always have banana plants for sale, some figs, grapes, passiflora, a few odds and ends, and nest Spring hope to graft several cherimoyas (the rootstocks are finally getting to size)

Hey, in all fairness, it took me two days to move all my bananas inside. And I enlisted my husband's help to move the largest 12 footers...Also the garden tractor and trailer. But yes, that was a lot of digging. Thank goodness for the hot tub and advil!
I do love bananas, but I don't think I'll have 65 to dig up again this fall. I'm going to thin them out somewhat through the farmers' market. (by the way, I said that last year, when I only had 20 to dig!)

4.basjoo

Well, when I first started back in May, I had two types: 4 Blue Javas and 1 Gran Nain. But the list seems to have grown a little  ! Now I've got 5 different types to bring in for the winter:
1. 4 Blue Javas
2. 1 Ruby Siam
3. 1 Gran Nain
4. 1 Giant Sweet plantain
5. 2 Orinocos
6. 1 Sikkimensis
But I'm Definitely stopping at five, well, six after I get my Orinoco. It's just one more so that's not much. Having Too Many types of nanners takes up a lot of time and I got a lot to do. So when I get my Velutina & Ae Ae I'm stopping there cause I really don't need Glui Khai or a Namwah. Well, I've got 5 :) !
UPDATE
Got 2 Orinoco corms from Bob in New Jersey!! They're up with leaves so now I officially grow 6 kinds of nanners!

Hi island cassie, all my nanas are kept in the the green house from October to April, most of my nanas are in 10 inch pots so i can easily manage them,so they wont get to big.

Hi Mushtaq - that is still a tremendous amount of work and a great achievement - congrats!

Andrew - they grow like steam here, but no varieties are available to buy - I have to have them couriered in which costs $$$. Occasionally if I am alert, I can spot something a bit different and hope to get it id'ed - crazy really!! People don't rate nanas here (probably because they do grow so easily) and will chop down something quite nice to improve the view! The source I obtained my tall red from has just burnt the whole mat to get a sea glimpse. I would have had more pups from them if I had known what they were going to do. Fantastic number of varieties by the way!

Wow, this is an old thread! I can't believe I posted this 5 years ago. At the time I was living in Tampa and I was in the process of planting more palms in my yard so I was removing bananas to make room. When I originally bought the house, I wanted something tropical looking and fast growing so I started collecting bananas. Eventually my yard started to look like a plantation so I started removing some and only kept my favorites.

Now that I am in Costa Rica, I have no idea what some of these bananas are. No one seems to know the real names here, just the local names. They are growing all over the place since this area used to be surrounded by banana plantations many years ago.

I believe to have the following (that I can identify):
Cavendish type (a taller one and a shorter one)
Tall Red
Pelepita
Zebrina
A few different colored Ornata's
Musa coccinea
A few different Plantain varieties (can't id them)
Ensete perrieri
Gros Michel - a friend has been growing these here for many years and has large fields of them planted out. I recently obtained a couple nice big sword suckers. These are really delicious bananas!

That's what I thought. When they grow wild most people don't collect them. They are weeds. I grew up in New York and hate the cold and snow and have collected tropicals. Bananas are the tip of the ice berg.

My list really grew this year...

Thai black, Bordelon, ice cream, sikkimensis daj giant (supposedly), zebrina, ornata, velutina, namwah 'pearl' (?), cheeka, raja puri, tall red, Siam ruby, yunnanensis, dwarf cavendish, African red, aeae, basjoo, Ensete ventricosum, Ensete glaucum, Musella lasiocarpa - all in the ground.

Rose, monkey finger, golden aromatic, African rhino horn, mysore, saba, ebun musak, cardaba, mahoi, kluay kai - all in pots. I'll plant them in the spring of 2010 after wintering in a greenhouse just to geive them a head start.

Andrew - the human being is perverse - in England I struggled to grow tropicals - and now I have a sneaking longing for tulips, fuschias and roses! But having said that - I love and enjoy all the exotic things that creep into the garden unannounced and whose names I don't know. http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=17084&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=17084&ppuser=628&sl=i)

Like some of theses crackers - the ferns come of their own accord - including some that look very like the Boston Ferns I used to struggle to grow in the UK! OK - I can identify heliconias, begonias, cattleya orchids, and areca palms of course - but the rest???

Very very cool looking jungle! I love it! Nice Phylo climbing the tree. I am planning on moving to Hawaii in five years and look forward to the creeping I don't know what it is as well. My yard looked like crap when I moved in.

Hi fredos417.

Yes, we are familiar with ice cream. Lots of them on this site - pretty and easy to grow. You're a little off on the mature height, though. My p-stems are over 12 ft (just measured them), and I'm sure others are too. You can easily add another 8-10 ft. of foliage on top.

Here's a pic of my clump back in July, and it is even taller now.

Due to my acquisitiveness and some VERY generous folks here on the org, I now have:

Basjoo, Siam Ruby, High Color Mini, Truly Tiny, Bordelon, Dwarf Cavendish, Chinese Yellow, Burmese Blue, Dwarf Orinoco, Sikkimensis, Maurelli, E. Glaucum, Zebrina, Ornata Bronze, Saba

My palms, EE's, tropical hibiscus, hardy hibiscus, plumeria, orchids, clerodendons, etc.- don't even ask!!

And then we get into pond plants, and indoor houseplants, and tropical fish, and pond fish, ....and worst (actually best) of all....books.

Edit- Tog was just starting to mentor me on the tropical euphorbias. Damn, I miss our buddy.

It is so cold sensitive, I figured I would get it thru the winter in the garage again and then plant the main stem inground in the spring. I put one of my RP pups inground in July--already it is amazing how much bigger it is than the 2 that are in pots.

Basjoofriend Hi, Joachim, son of a gun, what are you doing there in my country?
You made me jealous of you. You have so many types of bananas, even the Musa Basjoo, Sakhalin, that's incredible !
I'm growing bananas too, here in Mie, Japan. I tried to grow: banana prata, ouro, banana da terra, banana pao, maca, nanica, etc., but they all didn't resist our cold climate. In the first winter, they were all gone. The varieties I have here which can stand the frost and the snow is the Musa Basjoo, Musa Liukiuensis, Lady finger from Okinawa and the Raja puri from India. Be Careful with the Sigatokas. I wish you the best.
It's nice to know you.

Without the benefit of being able to taste them one after another and compare, I'd guess my favorites are Dwarf Brazilian, Gros Michel, Mysore, Tu'u Ghia and either Goldfinger or Mona Lisa. Nang Phaya was exceptional that I remember, but it's been 3 years since I've tried it. That, Namwah, FHIA-03, and maybe praying hands round out my top 10 as out of hand ripe bananas. Cooking bananas I think of separately and don't have enough experience with but I enjoy any Maoli types, Praying Hands, Hua Moa. Actual plantains I'm working on growing but the few I've had in Hawaii have been good.

Kandrian I've never tried and never heard of it being available where I live until recently. I'm 2nd on the list to get from a friend. I've also been hesitant to get massive bananas because my space is limited and I try not to block the ocean view from neighbors up the hill from me. It's why I haven't bothered with Sabas or the larger Reds. But now that I have more space on a lot that won't block views I'm open to Kandrian.

Sucrier is good, but not amazingly so. Didn't realize until I made that list that it's not in my top 10. In general I prefer ones that aren't purely sweet, with Gros Michel and Tu'u Ghia being the excellent exceptions so far.

I just acquired Ice Cream. Got 3 unknowns, all within this week. Worried about winter here in zone 7A, Tn.
