I am so excited i now have 3 baby superbum and 2 blood bananas, germinated in just over 2 weeks, I planted velutina and purple ornimentle at the same time but none of these have came through yet. Can't wait for the rest to come through. This is my first post here but have been visiting looking for tips.

What kind of germination rate you get?

I had 5 superbum seeds and 5 blood bananas. I put the seeds in small plastic containers filled with damp vermiculit put the lids on the containers and gave them bottom heat at 35c. Superbum were on the heat all the time and the blood bananas just had room tem. over night. I have germinated birds of paradise and palms using just vermiculite and it worked great for them so i have tried the same with the bananas.

we had good luck with a bunch of Musa velutina, about 60%
we lost 30 to trays drying out(used egg cartons)

Thanks for the welcome .I really want velutina to germinate, this is my favourite banana. How long should this one take, I have 15 seeds so I hope to get some.

I got 4 out of 5 of superbum germinated. Still nothing with the velutina, they were planted on 9th January. I have them in the greenhouse on soil warming cable and I am giving them cooler temps at night, is there anything else i can do.

Hi Amber - congratulations on your success! I have some Superbum seeds sown at the moment, but no success so far :(. I'm also planning on sowing some Musa seeds soon, so fingers crossed for some success.

Thanks, take care

Pete

Amber, congrats on the germination. It's good when that happens, isn't it!

Where did you get the superbum seeds from? I quite fancy having a go at these, so a good source of viable seeds is useful.

Btw, where is Scotland are you from. A tad chilly up there, isn't it?

Mustang (Or H ) - I got my seeds from Seedman in the sale. Still nothing coming up. My method was soaking them in hot water, then letting it cool to allow water into the seed, and them I've sowed them in plastic cups and put them in the heated propagator. Still, they haven't been in long so I'm not ruling them out by any means. Pray for germination!

Thanks, take care

Pete

I get my seed from Jungle seed, I have had quite a few different seeds from here, I just recently got my second batch of Bird of Paradise for them and 7 out of 10 germinated in 4 weeks, they have quite a lot of bananas to choose from, they also sell plants. I have bought seed from other places but think the ones from Jungle do germinate better. Yes it is very cold here but I have heat in my greenhouse so I manage to grow quite a few tropical plants. I live about 23 miles from Edinburgh. I am also growing Plumeria from seed at the moment have 10 little seedlings growing.
