Is there any dwarf type fruiting bananas you can successfully grow indoors, (and put them out on the porch/patio in the summer for sun) I have a co-worker now interested in bananas because well ... during down time I was telling her about my banana project. But she lives in an apartment with a little patio attachment and asked me if I can find out for her. Thanks.

she could try the dwarf cavendish,or the sdc. high color mini musas fruit and they get up to 4 ft. tall. maybe a little bigger. dwarf orinocos are suppossed to get 8-10 ft tall. she could try any of those. as far as anything else youd have to look in the nana wiki to find more. these are the only ones i know about . so far.... lol. i keep my dwarf reading to a few so i would not get them mixed up. i want to try a dwarf red.

Thanks for the info, I bet she would like the high color mini musas. She was thinking 6ft or less. Thanks MsKitty for the quick reply. I'm spreading the banana addiction >.<;

i have a friend who now everytime we go to school she wants to go to the nursery. we have a garden center in cookvegas that we havent looked at yet. but we plan on going soon.lol. the adiction spreads like wildfire.i love my high color minis. they are i think real easy to grow. mine have done very well inside the house. im planing on planting one of the pups outside that i took off the mom plant. i love the color and the shape of the leaves.

In my opinion, she isn't thinking of something as short as 3-4 feet as in HCM or SDC, but rather 6-7 feet which is managable. I would say DC is her best choice for an easy to maintain banana plant that will produce fruit. The reason I say this (even though HCM produces edible fruit (see NANAMAN's gallery)) is because HCM wont produce 'that' effect as much as DC will.

Just my opinion!

Im going to have to ask her what she exactly wants. When I figure that out, I may be looking for whatever plant that she wants, as she doesnt have the internet... She wants something that will fruit for her (which is understandable) but considering she lives in an apartment, I told her that it may not, but she still wants one anyways. (which too is understandable), I wish I had a printer to print out pictures for her to see pics of the plants.

I think it's funny how easy it is to get someone to want to grow a banana plant!

I think for me it's partly romantic! Being surrounded by big, tall banana plants with big flowers hanging off of them would make me feel so GOOD! Once I let my tropical fantasies loose to investigate and find there really are ways to have tropics in my yard, even if for part of the year I realized that saying is true ... "don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon"

Ahava I won't be surprised when your neighbor joins the forum! LOL

I can't wait to get this show on the road. My first two are just a foot tall.

Deb, you'll probably have some 6 footers by the end of next season, and if you have any Ornata they'll bloom this year.

"it's partly romantic!"
That's why I need to move to Florida!

I have one.
PM me if interested. I also have Ornata "Royal Purple" which in my opinion is twice as nice. Look in my gallery, there is a whole album for Royal Purple!

Cookie,

Ornata is the same as Musa laterita which you e-mailed me about a few weeks back. However, M. ornata 'Royal Purple' is a different cultivar than the one I have that you wanted. Mine is the same as M. ornata 'Bronze'. It has a reddish bloom. I'll let you know when I have some pups ready. Probably in about 4-6 weeks. It may still be a bit too soon for you.

Sorry for the double post, my computer goofed up. I was just trying to add that M. laterita is what my avatar (picure under my user name) is.

I think the imfamous Logees Lady finger would be an excellent choice!
It meets the criteria you mentioned and has done well in containers for several members .
You can see some nice pics(potted and blooming) in GaTrop 's and Nanaman's galleries.

Brent that is perfect!! I had no idea they were the same. All I looked at back then was big tropical green leaves when I ordered from you and that was OK for me!! I didn't even ask about a flower! LOL The two colors will look so nice. I have a south facing wall that I can put a raised bed against and have a wind break. Will plant yours and Taylor's there this year.

YES .. still cold here. This is really a long cold snap we're having.

I would recommend Musa Velutina - it produces pretty little pink bananas (they are tasty, but have seeds), and will bloom in a pot.

Dwarf Cavendish or Super Dwarf Cavendish, she will perhaps wait forever for fruit if the plant is potted up.

You all have insurmountable patience with a newbie like me. I will look back someday at all my questions and comments and laugh at myself!!

That's what learning about them is all about!
We all share the same love, so its ok. It's good to talk about these things because a lot of other people will read the information and it will help people many years from now.

Yes and thanks to everyone whose replied to this. I'm making up a list with a short description of all the plants so that she can make a decision on them. I'm definately learning something new all them time.

So true Jarred .. I've already learned so much from your past threads of years ago! I've been on your website several times too (I'm pretty sure it's your website...I saw your name mentioned on it)... going to order some bananas to taste next time they're available!

I'm making the same list for myself Ahava ... the Musa Velutina is on top I think. I love the idea of little pink bananas. I think it's very appropriate that our grandkids call us NANA and Papa! I have my grandson eating a banana with chocolate milk at night for leg cramps.
