Does somebody know what is the cold-hardiness of these species? :coldbanana:

As far I know Musa sanguinea is also originary from Assam in India and Yunnan in China were some of our cold-hardy bannanas are distributed, but I could not found at what altitude it grows

Musa violascens seems alto to grow in the highlands 1500 m in Malaysia

BTW. I would like to hear from our banans 'experts' :), the classification of the pictures is correct, specially with the violascens (there are often mistakes with 'violacea') :bananas_g

Those are both awesome flowers! Honestly though, I don't think that the second one is Musa violascens. Did any of the leaves have reddish variegation on them? The flower just doesn't look like the pics I've seen of it, and there are supposed to be two rows of male flowers instead of one like is in the pictture. Here are 2 of the pics from Constantine's site:

Mviolascens001 (http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~drc/mviolascens001.htm)

Mviolascens002 (http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~drc/mviolascens002.htm)

You can easily make out the two rows of male flowers in the first picture, which the plant in your pictures doesn't have. If I had to guess, I would say that the plant in your pics is M. violacea. Here's a picture of the leaves:

http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~drc/mviolascens003.jpg
Mviolascens003 (http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~drc/mviolascens003.htm)

Notice also how the male bracts persist on the rachis in the first picture.

As for the M. sanguinea, I think it is supposed to have a horizontal inflorescence. Whatever that banana is though, it is really nice! Thanks for the pics.

Bigdog is right, the second banana is not M. violascens. M. violascens is a Callimusa species and the one in the photo is a Rhodochlamys, perhaps the name was mixed up from M. violacea. I don't know what the red leaf picture from Davids site is about, I've always wondered if it was just a mix up in names too because M. violascens has green leaves.

As for M. sanguinea, the species has not been seen in a very long time, no verified living plant of it is known. There are hybrids of it (such as 'African Red'), but the pure species only has 3 fingers per hand at most. The one in the photo appears to be some hybrid Rhodochlamys, who knows what the parents are as there are so many of them out there like this.

Thank you all for your information. We already discussed with Carlos Simon about the possibility of this M. vilolascens being in fact a 'violacea'

As to the M. sanguinea I was 'shocked' :2750: when Carlos told me having one, I know is very rare in cultivation.

Maybe Carlos can tell us more information about it origin.

In any case nice flowers ˇˇ :)

Hi,

I have not information about the exact origen of the mother plants. I´ve received these Musas from a well reputable botanical garden. I´ll try to ask them again.
Now my plantas are almost destroyed because we had a very strong hurricane :rollerbananadone:, but as soon as they recover I´ll take more pictures.
Regards,

Carlos

Hi Jarred,

M. "violascens" is fine again, but M. "sanguinea" is in the shadow now and the shape is not good. I hope it survive till spring season and then I´ll move it...
Regards,

Carlos
