Hi all,

I harvested a shaddock pomelo for a trial of its taste.
Some one says it is not good as expected. Yes or no will be known soon.

Sweet and a little sour and not juicy like grape fruits. The rind is good
material for delicious marmalade.
Sorry I missed a picture of what it looked like opened up.

They are Citrus maxima. They have them in stores around here, ocasionally. They're usually a couple of dollars each. To me, they're not worth it. You start out with a fruit that's twice as big as a grapefruit but, because of the thick pith, the edible portion is only as big as a regular grapefruit.
Citron is Citrus medica, The rind is used, candied, in baking. The little green cubes in a fruitcake are citron. Citrons are usually oval shaped, but I had one variety called Buddah's Hand, pictured below. ( I saw one of these, about 6 inches long, in the supermarket, the other day. They wanted $7.00 for it.)

Thanks for the information John. I have never seen either in the shops, but I knew that they candied citron peel.

Yes, it is a kind of citrus. So the taste is more or less similar to that of other
citrus like grape fruits, sweety etc.

As john_ny has replied, pummelos are citrus maxima, while citron are citrus medica, which includes Buddah's hand or fingered citron (citrus medica var. sarcoductylus).

The grapefruit(Citrus Xparadisi) is a natural cross between the pummelo and the orange. While grapefruit is more popular, I have yet to taste a grapefruit that is as sweet as a Chandler or Sweet Thai pummelo. Granted there are sour pummelos, but I'm just comparing sweet grapefruit vs. sweet pummelo. Grapefruit has soft pulp, whereas the pummelo's is firm and slightly snappy. It's a lot easier to eat the pulp of the pummelo because it's easier to peel the sack over its firm pulp than the grapefruit. Grapefruit leaves you a slight aftertaste while a pummelo doesn't.

I tend to agree that they are not worth what they charge at the groceries. But sometimes, at Costco, or even some Asian stores in Seattle, they could be reasonable. As for me, I prefer the pummelo over the grapefruit.

I forgot, since you live in a tropical climate, there must be some pummelo growing in your country. They may not be popularly/commercially sold, but I'm sure there are some folks that grow them there.

Thanks Chong, Asacomm - we get very little variety in citrus although I would have thought that someone must grow pomelo. The problem is that the island is so big and the central mountains are so high, that the regions are quite isolated. For instance - lemons are apparently grown for export but are never available in the local markets. We supply all our friends and neighbours. The local oranges are green and woody, and the few grapefruit available are very pippy - why someone doesn't grow better varieties is a mystery - if I had more land I would do it in a heartbeat. I think I will have to buy some pomelo seed now I have today found homes for the last 15 balsa trees and freed up some space.

Now, I'm going to have to get a scion or 2 from you of each of those. (When do you prune your treess?) The best ones I've tried are from the "Yabu" farm in the Philippines. Nothing anywhere comes close to it for sweetness. And they are virtually seedless. Unfortunately, the farm was taken from the original owners and the farm went under due to lack of knowledge by the new owners. I don't even know if any budwood can still be obtained, much less any plants. If there ever was a "Sunkist" of pummelos in the Philippines, this was it. The Sunkist pummelos we get in Seattle aren't too bad. Just not Yabu level.

Hi Chong,

It is certainly "Citrus Grandi"=Citrus Maxima which tells very big one as my
pic shows.

So many sorts of pomeloes are commercially grown in our country, especially
in southern islands like Shikoku and Kyushu.

Hi mskitty,

It tastes something like grapefruit+chandler pomelo. They grow anywhere
citrus grows.
For your info, it's weight was 4.5lb, about 1.5 times heavier than the norml
weight. Was very large anyway indeed.
