We hadn't been into the garden much last week because of all the rain, and when we did - we found Hispaniolan Woodpeckers had drilled into one of the main supports of the pergola we built a year ago, and made a nest about 7ft above the ground. These birds are bold and relatively unafraid of people and we are thrilled to have them move there from the coconut palms in the front yard - even though it probably means the top will fall off the pergola post soon!!! The bird life here is amazing and in our small yard we have nests of bananaquits, woodpeckers and flycatchers.
