Is anyone growing Green Sapote (Pouteria viridis)? I'd really like to hear about where it is "working", where it is miserable, is it vigorous, etc.

I'd sure like to grow it -- I know that some pioneers grew it in the nearby Fallbrook area. Here's a plant-tag photo from Daleys Fruit in Australia.

I have hopes of growing this one, though all but one of my seedlings failed. I will probably just buy a plant.

I came across this posting in the 2004 Rarefruit newsgroup archives, written by a person in Santa Barbara:

A quick report on my Green Sapotes here in coastal Southern
California. I have two varieties: TREC 32 and Makawao.
These are grafted, the first onto Mamey rootstock and the
later on Green Sapote seedling rootstock. They are both only
two years old but both show slow growth even through our
winters which have often this year been in the mid 30s
(colder than normal). The Makawao is fullly exposed to the
prevailing winter winds and shows it with the leaves turning
a copper color as if cold stressed. The new growth leaves
tend to fall off although the main branch continues to add
length and the growth tips remain viable. The TREC 32 is
sheltered from the winds and is in a protected area behind
my house. Its leaves remain a vibrant green and all growth
continues throughout the winter months. Neither have
flowered/fruited as yet and are only 3 feet tall so far.

Richard,

I have a Green Sapote seedling growing in Glendora, CA. It's about 5ft tall. Right now it's pushing new growth but has not flowered yet. It seems to like the cool winter. For what I have read, seedlings take anywhere from 8 to 10 years to fruit.

By the way last year a contacted the person you're referring to in you post with the 2 Green Sapote trees. One of the trees had a fruit on one tree and 8 on the other one.

I visited Quail Botanica Gardens in San diego last year and they have 3 Green Sapote trees growing there. Two of them had fruit on them. I posted some pictures on Cloudforest cafe forum.

Racor, that's really awesome! :2216:

Would you happen to know what variety the seeds were from?

Thanks!

I purchased this tree from Roger Meyer Nursery. According to him, he brought the seeds from Australia and is supposed to be from a large Green Sapote variety unlike the ones seen here. But there is no variety name.

BTW, I found some grafted Green Sapote trees online at TopTropicals and I had to purchase one. I just hope it will survive shipping stress and winter temps.

I have a seedling I'll be planting out this month. Tasted one and it was fantastic, superior (to me) to mamey. I realize it'll be a long time and with variability of seedlings, who knows what will happen. I may graft a friends onto mine.

I had to revive this old thread, I also grow green sapote, Mine is a seedling which was given to me, I've found it to be incredibly precocious and cold hardy, Much more so than Mamey seedlings I have.

I received it april 2012, this is what it looked like

there are a few fruits from completely different species that all go by the name "sapote" it's pretty confusing.. one is the white sapote, which is supposedly related to citrus, then black sapote, which is related to persimmon, then there is green and mamey sapote, which are also different.

still that white sapote is really impressive Can't wait til my white sapote is as mature as yours!

Here's a disambiguation I wrote a while back: SAPOTE-NAMED FRUITING PLANTS (http://www.plantsthatproduce.com/column/PTP_2008_06_Sapote.htm)

RIchard, you started this thread, What has your experience with green sapote been like? If you notice my previous post, I mention the one that was given to me and is now some 8+ feet tall. Has your fruited yet? any info would be appreciate :)

Don't own one, but I'd sure like to plant it at my new home in western Vista CA. I know of two trees that are fruiting in southern CA -- one in Santa Monica Canyon and the other in eastern Camarillo CA. They are both mature, perhaps 15+ years old.

you should purchase one! If I could make it to so cal I would find and purchase a grafted Green sapote. My seedling tree, that was given to me, puts on amazing amounts of growth and is unphased by winter, it's completely the opposite of Mamey sapote. It grows great here even in my cool summer weather!

This morning I visited Roger & Shirley Meyer in Fountain Valley CA to purchase a Green Sapote (Pouteria viridis). They have 2 or 3 dozen plants about 3 years old in 5 and 15 gallon pots. At $35 each for the 5 gallon pots I just couldn't resist -- I came home with three! You can contact them here: XotcFruit (http://www.jujubesales.com/Contact-Us.php).

This afternoon I repotted the new green sapotes in 15 gallon pots. For soil mix, I used Sunshine All-Purpose Planting Mix (http://sungro.com/products_displayProduct.php?product_id=11&brand_id=8). After the trees were in the pots, I topped the soil with about an inch of Sequoia Mini Orchid Bark (http://sequoiabark.com/products.html#orchid). It's a necessity here because our humidity is low.

Also, I removed the top couple of nodes (about 2") from the central leaders to promote branching.

As noted in this thread, a few years ago I bought some seedlings of Green Sapote (Pouteria viridis) (http://www.ars-grin.gov/cgi-bin/npgs/html/taxon.pl?102619) from Roger Meyer. I've been propagating them in 15 gallon pots and training them for production. They are currently about 1" diameter caliper and about 2 feet in height above the soil line with numerous side branches.

Since there are many entrepreneurs here, I'm wondering what is the base price I should offer these plants on eBay or similar. Your advice is appreciated!

$15 + Shipping to me. haha j/k
If you are going to sell it on ebay add about 45% to what ever value you expect to get for it. The fees are SO high now! What I would usually pay for a tree about that old would be $30 - $45. This is in a 15 gal pot, if you are sending the pot I would expect to pay about $65 - $80 for this type of tree and size. If you sell it on ebay I would go $110 + Shipping

Those are beautiful trees you picked up!

They grow SO fast, compared to mamey sapote.. Mine is about 12 feet tall now.. here's a pic form last summer shortly after i planted it in ground.

The pics aren't the best, it's hard to get a good picture of it because of the light angle.

Before i planted it.. I think this was sometime in 2013..

Well...

My ~5' (after a foot broke off) Green Sapote (unknown grafted cultivar) has been in the ground around 4-5 years and it's hardly grown at all. Last year was its first bloom cycle but the flowers all fell off. This year it has bloomed EVERYWHERE from the ground up to the tips of the branches. Its caliper is around 1.5" and has looked healthy the whole while I have owned it.

I've had problems with canistel and loquat setting fruit due to a lack of local bees so I started hand pollinating the loquat and green sapote. The loquat fruited profusely and the GS still is hanging onto the tiny fertilized fruits.

If it doesn't set fruit this year I'll give it one more year then I will have to re-think having a GS.
