I've been watching one of my plants for a week or so that has yellowing leaves. It's been in the same spot since probably summer of 2004 and was doing very well. I went out to look at it last evening and touched it and it started falling over. I panicked and pulled it up. It has several large roots, but looks like it's starting to rot. The soil is quite wet for the tiny amount of rain we just had. I have quite a few plants in the same area and now I'm worried. What would be the best thing to do? More soil maybe? Mulch?
Thanks!:(

i like to use mulch, which is equal to the soil amend. yu buy as soil conditioner..

in fact i posted earlier that i rooted corms in straight mulch..
this after i saw a tall orinoco start to grow in mulch pile, i threw it there to really get it out of the way. i figured it would go ahead a die, but OH NO it started to thrive..

Anna, have your temps gotten into the 40s yet? Ours have and i'm getting the same yellowing leaves (just the lowest, oldest ones) on the outside plants. However, that sure wouldn't cause rot.

Is it small enough to pot up and bring inside? I would.

Otherwise, I'm thinking you might need something to help with drainage, like sand. I have always been told "moist not wet" but then I also had bananas growing in a swampy area quite nicely.

Thanks for your replies! I finally bought some good mulch and hope it will help the other plants in that area. I had another plant I pulled up and moved because it was doing the same thing as the first plant. I'm really sick about this one. It's a pup from my original Orinoco that has been moved several times around the yard. The weather here is wonderfully warm right now so the soil is getting a chance to dry a bit.
