Randy, they are Oohing and Ahhing over what you are doing with your palms! Take a look!

"tHAT GUY IS INSANE!

WE NEED HIM HERE!"

"umm, WOW! Has he had sucess that way before? It seems to me, that cutting off all the fronds would not be a good idea! (except for washy's, they are fairly hardy and fast) "

Well done, Randy. :coldbanana:

Lynn,
Make sure you study up on the different types of palms, which I know you probably will. Here is a link to give you a little info on the hardiest types...
Here is a quick reference:

it is a big ole wopping 28 * f in the big old spartavegas tonight.its an icy cold, its bone chilling! i feel sorry for you guys in fl. how are you taking precautions with 13 acres of nanas and cyads? let alone any that dont usually require to much protection? do you wrap them or bag them or just leave them and see what the outcome will be? ive seen some of the protection methods, but how do you cover that many things in just a few hours?

32 F. here, thats the warmest its been in five days, yesterday when I left for work at 6am. it was -4 been warming ever since, 7 inches of week old snow and now we're looking at 40's 50's the next three days with rain,(get rid of the snow cap) then 30 will feel warm, when the sun comes out, odd weather, yes , but ,thats Northern Illinois, 4 seasons every year, though sometimes spring and fall only last a few weeks, Then it gets really hot or really cold, thus my pots for my plants, Best wishes to all:nanadrink:

Michael,
What size needle did you get? Would love to see a picture of it when you have the time... Good luck with it and take care of it. In time it will be a real crowd stopper!!!

Thanks Randy, heres a few photos of it in the house. After reading up at the links you provided me, I decided to plant outside in the spring.

nice collection you have there!

Thanks! I am sure you know how it goes, I did not plan to have so many plants in my house. In that photo in additon to the palm is: Cycad, Cannas, elephant ears, dwarf cavendish, Christmas cactus, bird pepper.

I have no idea what the tall, leggy pink plant is though. Hopefully its not too toxic as you can see in one of the photos, a cat has chewed one leaf?

Anyone knowwhat the pink plant is?

it looks like a plant i saw at lowes last nite...the name? according to lowes intelligent marketers it is called... assortated colored foliage...i hate it when they do that. yours has a lovely color and the height is nice, it looks better then the one at lowes did. i started with one nana tree...im having to go get some shelving today just to keep the plants off the floor. so i understand the crowing aspect. lol. what kind of cat do you have? i wouldnt let him eat your plants it could be bad ju- ju for him. my cats are not allowed in the nana room. cats and dirt dont get along. lol. plus i have datura and im trying angles trumpet from seed and all parts of those plants are poison.

Whatever it is, its fast growing as it was a 2 inch cutting mid summer. I bought it at very inexpensive local nursery that does not label all their plants.

We have a total of 4 cats and unfortunately they were up to some mischief when we were gone this holidays. I can't think of a practical way to keep them away from that room as there are no doors and the cats like to lay in the sun with plants. Typically there are outside where they eat their foilage.

Anyways back to Palms.... Surely the needles on my needle palm will repel any curious cat.......

Needle will repel: cats, squirrels, humans, etc. Thanks for the pic and best of luck with it and as I said earlier, I am sure it will bring you much satisfaction in the years to come... Just be patient with it as they are extremely slow growers...

Hey Benny,
You mentioned using this method to your nanners, well if you don't have access to 55 gallon plastic drums, a friend of mine uses plastic garbage cans in a similiar fashion... Here is a link to his method of which I borrowed some of his ideas...

He endures alot more severe winters than I do and is only about 1 1/2 hours northwest of me...

Cool! Thanks, I looked up Iresine herbstii on google images and most of the pictures are that particular plant. Maybe they are related or called different names in different areas but my chicken gizzard plant is much smaller, broader and has mostly yellow, green and a hint of pink/red leaves.

I will call it a Blood Leaf!

Thanks for the ID. :dreadlocksnaner:

Randy thanks for the info! That would be good for overwintering nannas. I would even do that in the front yard cuz i paint flowers and designs on my trash cans, so people wont steal them!! (of course i'd buy new for the nannas)

What i do to keep my cats out of my plants is to sprinkle fine black pepper over the dirt. Cats always sniff the dirt first. The pepper dosent hurt the plant or the soil. That pepper will make them back off! You'll have to re-apply after watering. Hope this helps.
