Tuesday a.m. low for me was 17.8F, and only got to around 26F for a high, yesterday. Temps this morning dropped to 10.7F, but are supposed to be up to around 40 today and then back down for one more night of lows in the upper teens. Went outside last night to check on things and tapped on one of my Basjoo pstems and it felt and sounded like solid wood... Guess this coming summers basjoos will not be as nice as last summer. As long as they come back I will be happy...

yahoo weather said it reached 39*f in miami last night. they are worried about the citrus crops now. they also said many growers sprayed the citrus with water to ice them and that it would insulate it. i heard of using snow to insulate but ice? learn something new everyday.

Hang in there guys, it'll get better eventually. Here in the Houston area we have been down to about 34-35 degrees the past two nights but so far all of my bananas seem OK. They don't look too good, but I don't think they have recieved any major damage. Of course, last year they were good until early Feb. when we breifly dropped below 32 for a bit so the worst could be yet to come for us here. However, it is supposed to be back up around 72 by the weekend! Woo-hoo! Unfortunately, it is just that kind of weather that
makes it so easy for tropicals to get damaged this time of year. With the temps all over the place the plants don't know what to do. They could start growing a bit again and then get nailed by a night or two of near freezing temps and really get hurt badly. Such is life on the Gulf Coast!

Spraying fruits with water prior to a freeze encases the fruit in a layer of ice (obviously) which keeps the fruit right at freezing, while the surrounding air temp drops even lower. If not for the ice, the fruit would suffer much worse damage due to the lower air temps. Basically, the ice does insulate it, sounds unbelievable but it works!

That is true, the same method is used here in early spring when the fruit
trees are flowering and there is a night frost coming up.

I didn't know you could do that when the trees are in bloom! We had a late freeze last year when the fruit trees were all in bloom and tons of people lost their fruit. We have a small, very young orchard that hasn't born fruit yet. This is good to know.

Come on down, Dan and Tara... There is a house two doors down that has a pool and is for sale... I want so badly to fix up the pool area over there, but the developer said he would pass info on to buyer, but didn't want to do it and then someone come to purchase and not want that look... I guess he made sense, but WHO wouldn't want a tropical look around their pool?!?!?!

On a serious note, that would have been really nice Randy, I would've liked it. I think they want more money from the house and are worried it would bring it down... even though that wouldn't be the case probably.

We hit 34 degrees in Port St Lucie this AM. Brought my 60 or so pups in the house and then noticed the fire ants roaming around. Caught it quick and isolated them to 2 SDC's. Sprayed the buggers on the tiles and put the 2 pups back outside in the porch shelter. Could have been worse - got lucky. Still patrolling for frogs, snakes, gila monsters and bobcats emerging from the foliage - no sign so far. Pups stay inside one more night then back outside. Looks like a jungle in here. Several pots in the 15 gal size and higher.
The big guys in the ground still look OK with only older leaves turning yellow. Got a full load of fruit on the Goldfinger and Dwf Orinoco still "hanging" in there. Hope they make it. Wore jeans and a jacket for the first time in 11 months --- holy cow!

Snakes? The're nothing to worry about, really. How do you feel about bobcats Samantha? Wife went out in the early AM Tuesday to get the paper and found herself face to face with the neighborhood BC - 20 feet away, strolling along the front of the undeveloped lot across the street. Sun was up already too. One foot stomp and the cat popped off into the palmettos.
Our area is about 60% undeveloped - lots of critters. Love 'em all - 10 years ago this area had wild hogs, I'm told. Recently, a big mama boar and her pups tore up a bunch of sod right in front of city hall - just a rootin' away. And a wild turkey hen stopped traffic for a while right on PSL Blvd strutting thru the grass next to the roadway. It's very gratifying to still see a bit of old Florida, now and then, in our times.

I think all of these cold temperatures are due to global warming. I read an article a week or two ago about how, according to most news reports and many scientists, warmer temperatures are due to globa warming, colder temperatures are due to global warming, increased hurricane activity is due to global warming, decreased activity is due to global warming, droughts are due to global warming, and heavy rains are due to global warming.
Also, from http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/01/science/01tier.html?bl&ex=1199509200&en=c666dbf8ef89c536&ei=5087%0A
A year ago, British meteorologists made headlines predicting that the buildup of greenhouse gases would help make 2007 the hottest year on record. At year’s end, even though the British scientists reported the global temperature average was not a new record — it was actually lower than any year since 2001 — the BBC confidently proclaimed, “2007 Data Confirms Warming Trend.”
Here is another interesting article that might mean that we better get used to protecting our bananas!

We've had a colder year than normal so far in California, it seems. Many years in the past couple of decades we only had 5-10 days of frost in my area but we've easily had more thant that already. Last January was the coldest since 1990 and I hope we don't get that cold again.
Good luck to all of you with your protection efforts. Don't freeze yourself!

Harvey I heard that information also on some type of learning channel on TV. Isn't the ocean raising a few inches a year also? Don't know if that's correct but seems like I had heard that also.

i can deal with the hila monsters, gekkos, scorpions, palmmetto bugs, misquitos, bobcats, boars, deer even packs of wild dogs, toads, frogs(tree frogs are the koolest) saquadas, aints, but i hate a snake. i know they are good for the garden and they get rid of mice...so do my cats. i dont like snakes. uhhhh. ive seen wild turkeys, have a deer that eats my hybred daylilies( till i planted daffies around them). then like a idiot, i walk up to the deer calling out to it come here with my hand out to pet it, suddenly relizing one good kick and im history. so i backed away slowly!!! even grandpa opposum who ate my cats food till i put it on a concrete wall, dogs in my yard...but i dont like snakes! we have a red tail hawk that lives in my hood( hes beautiful) and turkey buzzards these things dont bother me. a snake sneaks up on you and then jumps out and says im here i want to bite you! i had a very tramatic experience as a small child. i may not get to kill the snake but i dont go anywhere in my yard without the company of my shovel. . i have yet to see a bear in person but im not to sure i be scared of that. might be paralized with fear, but i dont think id be scared. lol!

I'm also going to blame my hair loss on global warming. Come to think of it, global warming is more than likely the reason I got that sinus headache the other day! Global warming is also responsible for my prescriptions being so expensive. My cell phone battery is almost dead due to global warming too.
Just having a little fun!
Seriously though, it has been nice and cold recently, but I haven't seen one temperature that has been out of zone for that area. Knoxville got to 12F yesterday morning and 15F this morning, still zone 8a temps. We are a zone 7a, but haven't seen zone 7a temps since Jan. 2003. This is January, after all! I'm in Orlando presently, visiting my folks. They predicted as low as 26F for here, but I think the low was 31F. We were 30F here in Oviedo, FL. Citrus all looks good, and the cold air will actually help to sweeten the fruit up a bit.

No. I would be sitting under 4 feet of water right now if it was (I'm already below sea level as it is!!!). Some reports in the media would like to have you believe that, though. The sea level has risen in some areas and dropped in others, but not in inches anywhere that I know of (I have read some figures of 2mm which is less than 1/10 of an inch). http://illconsidered.blogspot.com/2006/06/sea-level-in-arctic-is-falling.html
Bigdog, I'm just having some fun too!

Like they say, higher in some locations and lower in others. You should ask around to see who got your 15 points! LOL

maybe global warming caused my idiot teachers brain to expand and then it leaked out his ears... higher in some areas, lower in others! ha ha. i was one of the lucky ones. only 1 other person got a 100 and one got a 75. everyone else in class got lower then i did. we are still waiting on the appeals for that paper of mine. so yes global warming is to blame. ha ha
