We live in Florida it is not supposed to get this cold. It may be record breaking. I went by rmplmnz house and picked up some plants ,what a nice guy and some very nice plants! I should of brought the truck when he said pups I did not expect 7 foot plants. Anyway they are inside till the freeze ends so they are safe. But the 4 plants I have needed some protection. I did what I could and am keeping my fingers crossed. Oh, that so sucks. :( And I know how you feel after our last year's winter. Thanks for the great idea for the tents, though!

Thanks for posting the construction of those tents. I had my husband take a look at them for us down the road. Am going to bookmark that along with bigdogs detailed banana plant removal to store under the house photos. Good luck to you during this freeze!

I believe it has been 3-4 years since we have had a freeze.
Nice that your taking all the precautions you can.
I threw up some hay around the base of the plants and the ground. I'll take my chances. I have pups in pots that I moved inside.
I am more concerned about my coconut. It's approx 5 years and just started fruiting this year. Too large to cover :0493: :0493:

Like Anna said, I feel your pain after the Arctic blast we had last winter. My garden is still showing signs from the damage. You might be able to save the pineapples by loosely tenting the plastic sheeting over them too. Best of luck to you guys in Florida. :2709:

How's it looking Tampa?
Most of my exposed leaves are largely flat and tattered with a dark purpleish hue.

Did not get as cold as they were saying but still was under freezing for awhile. I did cover my pineapples tapped into my dryer vent and ran the dryer all night in case it got in the low 20's. I do not think my papayas made out to good though.I figured the dryer would boost it much more than just covering.http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=7486&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=7486&ppuser=1497)http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=7487&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=7487&ppuser=1497)http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=7485&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=7485&ppuser=1497)

Great Idea! They're light enough to just lift off with the plastic still attached and store, ready to slip back over at any cold threat. I presume the 5 gallon buckets with the holes cut out are for the lights/heat source? Seems a person could add weight to the bucket, and put the cover back on, and tie it all down in case of heavy wind.
Heck, I might try it to keep the plants growing thru winter instead of hibernating. I was wondering what I was gonna do when I get a nice bloom right at the end of summer. Not tonight though...we've got 35-50 mph winds coming tomorrow with about 3-4 inches of rain.
Good luck!

2007 Is Tampa's 3rd Warmest Year On Record
By Neil Johnson of The Tampa Tribune
Published: January 8, 2008
TAMPA - If you thought it was a tad warm last year, you were right.
The National Weather Service says 2007 was the third warmest year in Tampa since record-keeping began in 1890.
The average daytime high temperatures were above normal, and morning lows were below normal.
The daily average high temperature of 74.5 degrees was 1.4 degrees above normal.
The warmest year since 1890 was 1990, with a 75.4-degree average, and 1998, when the average temperature was 74.6.
The highest temperature in 2007 was 96 degrees. That peak was reached on five days. The coolest day was Feb. 17, when the low was 35 degrees.
And in keeping with the Bay area's reputation as the lightning capital of the country, there were 62 days with thunderstorms and rain on 148 days.
