Hi guys,

I was looking on ebay (the uk one)for banana plants and a seller has listed 6 different ones today. I hardly have any experience with all the different nanas and hope you can advise me whether they are true bananas. The zebrina one he offers doesnt look like other small zebrinas Ive seen. Can someone have a look for me and advise whether I should buy them or not.
The sellers name is ....newforesthostas...

thanks:2788: :islandsharkbanana:

hmmm interesting. He hasn't sold bananas / plants before.
To be honest the zebrina looks more like Velutina to me?

That said the leaf shape is right and there do appear to be some dark patches on the photos so they may well be zebrina.

Maybe have to buy one to find out for sure but i am running out of space :(

thanks musa,

Did you see the zebrina listed by another seller, the plants are the same height and in the same size pot but they have definite markings on the leaves.
But you're probably right and I'll have to buy one to find out......my luck it will be a peace plant or something...haha

thanks for your help. its much appreciated.

I was looking at that particular sellers offerings. One other point, there was no picture of the actual plant you will receive - the picture published may be old or stock given the number of plants shown and only one or two on actual sale.

Now to the interesting bit. I contacted them and they stated that they grow over 6000 bananas a year in a greenhouse kept around 15°c. If that is the case they must be the main grower and distributer in the uk i would have thought ?? Note to myself Go visit !!

There is another vendor who sells Zebrina who has a shop called "Bissetii" unfortunately they have had some bad feedback recently.....

I bought a zebrina from bisetti, and it arrived in very bad shape.
I noticed the new nanas on ebay a couple of days ago,it was the sakhalin which caught my eye.
Not that I need one.lol

I too got a Zebrina from Bissetii and the packaging was awful. The worst packed banana I have ever bought. It needed most of the leaves removed as they were so badly damaged.

I too saw the bananas on ebay and I would say the Sakhalins must be TCd plants.

If you are desperate for a true Sakhalin contact Andy Bateman at Mulu.
Mine came from him before he moved back to his old site.

I got one from grub at the wisley meet so don't really need another.
If they do indeed grow around 6000 nanas a year then it might be an idea to visit them, never know what might turn up in those Tc trays.
When do they open?lol

They got me curious so i asked if they have other varieties the response was "we have six new varieties on the go for summer but we cant tell you which yet" teasers.....

Hi Kerrin
Where does your brother live?
Are you going to get any nanas from newforesthostas?

Hi Steve,

Hope you had a great new year!
sorry to take so long to answer, been a bit hectic last few days. My brother lives in Chelmsfield near bromley/orpington. I'm not going to buy anything yet as I've decided to wait till he opens the nursery and I will spend a few days at Colins and go out to look at the plants then. ( I can get more in the car than by post...lol)
Will let you know what they're like if I get there before you.

Hi Kerrin,
Happy New year to you
I used to work in the Bromley area quite a bit a few years ago so know the area quite well.Although that was before I got bitten by the exotic plant bug so I have no idea if there are any decent nurseries nearby.
Saying that you wouldn't be too far from the Palm centre which is allways good for a visit, just make sure you've plenty to spend and room in the car.
Luckily each time I've been I've had the van.
Then theres Architectural plants near Horsham, just down the M23.
If you find any hidden gems let us know.

well, I did succumb and buy a couple of the Sakhalins,I'll let you know their condition, they we're going in the post today.

and even better the new forest is on my doorstep so I'll have first dibs on the TC trays.:2742:

6000 bananas a year sounds a great deal. that could only work if they have a solid distribution deal with a nursery/store chain.

from a collector's ('hobbyist' for the colonials) point of view the market would be in much smaller numbers of the rarer varieties.

Just a suggestion but perhaps the interested amateurs in the UK should pool some resources here and put some rare stuff into TC.

I have been talking to others about this, especially with respect to the Yunnan species/varieties

PM me if you're interested and maybe we'll try and take the idea forward

Me to, i bought a "Golden" zebrina which i have turned up nothing on so far but the grower said its taller lighter green leaves with lighter red on the leaves than the Zebrina/Sumatrana so i am looking foreward to seeing it.

SteveW

I didn't even notice they were calling the 'golden' zebrina.
Might have to get one afterall.
I'm sure theres still some room left in the greehouse:ha:
Good idea about getting some of the rarer stuff Tc'd
None of mine are really worth tcing though as you can get them easily enough. And the ones that are aren't anywhere big enough yet.

I sent a Montbeliardii in for TCing but it never took for some reason. Kev as you know I have a Musa that is currently being TCd and there has been a delay in starting it so it will be a while before anything happens.

Is it newforesthostas selling the Golden Zebrina ? My last Zebrina from ebay turned out to be a variegated one:2720:

SteveW
01-04-2008, 09:01 AM
yup Newforesthostas.
So what're you getting done Mark?
And whereabouts do you send them to be Tc'd?
A good plant to get done would be E.Hiniba don't you think?as Kobas was the only place to get them from like the Monties.

Just got the golden zebrina i will try and post a pic of it later

Mark Hall

Steve its the Siam Ruby. Its being done down at southampton.

Hiniba would be a good shout. I only have one though and its a bit of a gamble if it dont work as I found out with the Monty:2190:

Maureliis can be bought cheap from the council growers so its not worth doing them either.

SteveW

How big do the plants need to be?
I allways presumed they needed to be large mature plants
Is that why you were thinking of getting another one the other week?

Mark Hall
01-04-2008, 04:01 PM
The Siam Ruby was only 18" tall when it was sent. So I wanted a back up in case it failed.

Did you get another inthe end or not?

well, once i've got costings for tc i may well come back to you if thats OK? I just think that some of the less readily available species should be out there for others to enjoy at a reasonable price. A quick trawl through the UK sites incl. ebay, yields no more than the usual suspects species-wise. I would just like to see a greater variety of plants out there in the market.

The 2 Basjoo Sakhalins arrived today, healthy plants, well packed in poster tubes. I'll pot them up tomorrow, take a few photos and pop them in amongst the regular Basjoo so I can monitor the differences, we'll see.

Well guys, I gave into temptation and I bought a golden zebrina and dwarf cavendish from newforesthostas on ebay yesterday. I will take some pics when I get them potted up. Will they grow in the greenhouse (heater is on!) or should I grow them inside till spring...what do you think?

:bunchonanas: Grow them in the house for a minute, so you can watch them more closely. Its really up to you! Magicgreen

thanks magic,

I think I'll do that for a while, that should impress my partner...lol..he is already complaining that the house looks more like a nursery than the actual one down the road.....roll on spring!

tell him that plants and trees give off oxygen, and that it is more healthy to have them in the house then in the gh or yard. haha. :D

Steve, Iam attempting to grow a Zebrina now from seed, with this smoke stuff i purchased online. OH Yea.....Its gonna work! Still waiting on my veleutina to germinate! ( fingers-crossed)

I might just have to purchase a heat mat!

Good luck with your seeds Lynn.
I tried velutina last year with no success, but then everything I tried last year was no good. This year I'm abit more hopeful that I'll get something to grow.
It'd definately be worth getting a heatmat,I use mine to supply a bit of extra warmth to my little nanas, pups etc.
I've not tried germinating seeds with one yet though as there never seems to be enough room left on it lol.
