Here is an article that looks at the effects of plastic in the ocean. Charles Moore is the Marine Biologist who personally brought back the Hawaiian Apples and Jamaican Reds that are growing in my garden. I've had several conversations with him and another Marine Biologist friend about plastic in the ocean and the effect they have on marine life. Pretty scary stuff! If you google his name you will find tons more info about him and his work.

i wrote my final research paper for eng.1010 (my first semester) on the coral reefs and the marine life in them. and a lot of what i wrote had to do with the destructive way humans treat the oceans. i have serious issues with a lot of things, but how the oceans are treated really @#$%^&^%$ makes me angry! the paper i wrote was very hard for me. the more i wrote the more sadistic i got. i re-wrote a 15 page paper(rough draft) 6 times. wanted to get the point across with out being dogmatic. i recieved a B+ on it. would have got an A on it but my margins and punctuation were not rite. she told me that was the best paper she had read since she started teaching. it was a subject near and dear to my heart. i was after all born under the fish sign.( hence the undying love for the ocean and its inhabitance) thanks for the site and the article.

Thanks, Mitchel.
I live along the Sacramento River, not far from the river's edge with prevailing winds for much of the year blowing lots of garbage. It just contantly amazes me all of the plastic crap that floats up to the shore. I do sometimes find things that are actually handy! 99% of the time it's just disgusting junk. Sytrofoam, plastic toys, broken pieces of one thing or another, bottles, a lost flip flop sandal, etc.

people who litter need to be flogged! people who dump trash, should be made to live in a pile of it for a week. i have seen a do not littler sign "$50 for littering" and a cop sitting under the sign and he throws a styrofome cup out the window. that makes me so mad. most people arent that way, but the ones that are, just need to be.....ill leave that for the department of justice. i wonder if the epa is hiring???lol

i grew up in Costa Rica and the saddest thing i have ever seen was the sea turtles that get caught in the six pack rings that the charter fisherman throw overboard; heads caught, flippers caught, even ones that have tried to eat them.

I used to surf at the mouth of the San Gabriel river where it meets the ocean in Seal Beach and after a rain it was one giant river of floating junk going out to the ocean. It's pretty gross to find hypodermic needles on the beach!

What really makes me angry are people who throw lite cigerrettes out their windows. I had to put out a fire from one that was burning near my house. Whats amazing is how many people must have drove right by it and didn't care.
