View Full Version : Edible bananas in Seattle?
I'm new to the forum and have a few banana plants growing indoors. 2 are Musa Esetes and the other is unknown. Are there any edible banana varieties that will grow in the Seattle, WA USA area? It doesen't get below 30F very often, but it dosen't get much above 80f either.

Welcome,
I, too, live in Seattle - on the west side of the south end of Lake Washington, in Lakeridge. I can see the end of the end of the lake and the north end of the Boeing plant from my deck. I've had several varieties of bananas that I've overwintered outside and some have actually survived. Last winter, I finally lost my last very old(parent plant obtained in 1974) Dwf. Cavendish from the Canary Isl. because of the 6 day power outage. But the Dwf Orinoco, Dwrf Brazilian, and Dwf. Niņos that were unintentionally left out during the cold spell, survived.
I know what you mean about the cool summers here. The Orinocos and Niņos will be 3 years old this summer and they're still just over a foot tall. The Niņos are a little bigger because they spent the summer in the greenhouse this year, albeit they were neglected when I was working in CA and Vegas for 7 months.
PM me your contact info. I can give you an Orinoco, if you're interested, and if I can find a nice one. Like I said, they were neglected when I was absent from the area.

have you thought about putting up a growth lite if you are overwintering some of your nanas in the house? it might help them some especially if you have very dreary days and no sun. i know that the lite i have is full spectrum and when there is more then 4 dreary days in a row i feel blah. so i sit in my nana room with all the growth lites on and in about an hour or so i feel better. maybe that is what your nanas need. im not an expert by any means, just a suggestion..:0489:

Hello Chong,
Your information is very interesing that Dwf Orinoco,Dwf Brazilian and Dwf
Ninos were survived even though they were left out during the cold spell.
I am also growing D.Orinoco and D.Brazilian, so I am interested in more pre-
cise infos.
Please tell me if they were left out unprotected or reasonablly protected.
Welcome Grog :2753:

I think the chances of getting any bananas to fruit up there are slim. Not saying that it cannot happen, but you never know. The prob. is that most(if not all) edible bananas need a certain number of hours of sun/ heat.
Here's a picture of my babies.

The picture with 2 plants are Musa ensete and are about 6 months old
The plant by itself is an unknown about the same age

Looks like the single one is a M. High Color Mini, or Super Dwarf Cavendish. If you got them from Home Depot or Lowe's, or even Walmart, they could be either one. At least in the Seattle area, that's where I usually see bananas with that coloration. They look nice!

both my dwarf orinoco banana and cavenish died last snow storm. Some webiste said cold hardy 8A some say only to 9a. Well it is 9A and not 8A. I see its been many years since the first post. Wondering what is new with your banana trees since then have you successfully fruited any?
