Logees just sent me an email indicating their bananas are for sale for $19.95

picture will follow.

I don't know how good they are but it looks like it's a good deal.

"
Bananas are amazingly fast and easy to grow. This new Super Dwarf Cavendish grows only 3' tall and produces bunches of 3-6" bananas in just one year. Large plant shipped in a 4.5"pot.

L1981-4 Reg. $19.95"

<logee-info@logees.com>

My mistake.
It is $14.95 plus shipping.

Musa cavendish 'Super Dwarf' "Super Dwarf Banana"
Now anyone can grow bananas at home! This exciting new strain of the Cavendish banana will actually produce fruit at a manageable height of just three feet or less. The bananas will appear often after one year. Although the fruit is smaller than commercial bananas, they're perfect for those little hands or small appetites. Banana plants do best in full sun; however, they will grow and produce fruit in partial sun. Keep them well watered with warm temperatures and regular applications of fertilizer for best growth and fruit production. They're amazingly fast and easy to grow. Grow in full to partial sun. While you wait for the first banana harvest, you can enjoy the decorative look of your plant which ships in a 4 1/2” terra cotta style plastic pot with saucer.

Don't know if you want to risk damage from the cold weather this time of year for shipping from the north where they're experiencing extremely cold temperatures. Besides, when my wife and I were in Walnut Creek earlier this year, we were able to buy, from Walmart in Martinez, 8 of what was in a group labeled SDC for $4.99 on sale from regularly $7.99. Though it turned out that 2 of them were Dwarf Cavendish, not SDC. Still not bad price because they were in 6" pots and the smallest trunk caliper was over 1" and the biggest was over 1-1/4". Leaf span was minimum 20".

Personally, I'd wait for the spring to order anything that needs shipping from and/or to the north. Several years ago, I ordered a dozen or so bananas from Stokes, and even the 6 Basjoo (they were a fad then) were "black mush" when I got them. They, too, were in 6" pots. And I'm in zone 8b, Seattle, WA next to Puget Sound.

If you're really brave, there's a Siam Red on eBay for $24.95/$7.95 shpng (cheap!) that I've been holding myself back from for over a month now. If you hurry, you might still get one. Here's the link:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=260192594445&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:BIN
From FL to southern states may be safer. But shipping to the north, I wouldn't want to risk it.

I am taking the risk. I just ordered the SDC.
I also ordered a lady finger last week and came in in 1000% excellent condition.
Had I seen that sale I would have bought them too.

Your risk is less than here up north. This week it has been in the upper 30's and low 40's in Seattle, and rainy(what else?). But last week they were in the low 30's to high 20's. But then again, last month, I got a cool Siam Ruby from yet another source in Port St. Lucie, FL for $23. It was too hard to pass up. It was yet the best shape I've received of any SR from anyone. And it's doing much better than the 2 much bigger ones I got from a source in Orlando, FL.

As far as the sales at Walmart for bananas go, they usually have them around May, and more in June. At the regular price, they're usually there around March. You're a little ways from Martinez, but I'm sure the Walmart in your area will carry the same stuff. We had to drive from Walnut Creek to Martinez because Neither Walnut Creek nor Concord would allow construction of Walmart stores. As an aside, these were the true Super Dwarf Cavendish from the Oglesby tissue culture people. The reason I know is because most of the SDC pots have that big plastic banana tag insert that is from Oglesby. Oglesby has the trademark/copyright to the "Super Dwarf Cavendish" name and logo (the tag). I used to order from them and I still have a box full of those tags.

I used to live in Lakeland. Old Colony Road. And I went to FSC. Took some Horticulture class there and then some. And I learned how to water ski at the campus lake. But that was years ago on the 70's. Can't imagine the difference now. Gas here is 3.47 a gallon unleaded.
Wish you luck with your SDC.

my walley world doesnt close either...but the only thing they have growing in the garden dept is FAKE CHRISTMAS TREES! i could see it if they were real and i could take them home to plant in the yard.....but fake trees in the garden dept??? thats an oxymoron if ive ever heard of one. then when you ask when are they gonna start getting seeds in (keep in mind its 32*f. here in the middle of dec. and excatly one week ago) and they looked at me like i was cracked. i also asked the 'manager' of the garden dept. if he had nanas coming in the spring, and the goober told me they have nanas in the fresh veggie dept. can we say box of rocks?? anyway, they have some 'nice' christmas cactus for 12.98 that look like they have been sitting there for 1 yr. so when i hear nanas at walmart for 3.98 each....good gracious!:2182:

Normally if we want bananas Miss Kitty, we would not go to Walmart.......we just go out and find a clump on the side of the road or a vacant lot and dig, whacking off the plant with a machette and just bring several big tubers back to plant a nice big clump. I have bought them at Walmart.....if they mark them down enough (below $4 or so) in the discount section. However, the Super Dwarf cavenish might be worth the $3.98 tag to plant with my Ae Ae's and my 'Siam Ruby'.

nana trees do not grow wild here in tn. lol! however you have given me an idea...my sister lives in gainsville fl...hummm. lol. i have never seen nana trees at walmart. that was the joke i was trying to convey. we in tn. either have to go to a nursery or from mail order or from people on the sites. if they got nanas here at our walmart( middle of hillbilly hicksville, i would probably flip my script.) its all you can do to get palm trees that are half alive.. lowes in cookvegas does get them on an occasion, and the ones i have seen there are nice looking.(mental note call lowes). i did get a nice little sago palm in a 6 in. pot for 6.98 there. so yeah the 3.98 for the tag for your ae ae is a pretty steep price for a tag. ha ha:islandsharkbanana:

I caught you guys talking about Wally World. They have the worst condition plants than any of the big stores.

I remember in South Florida that in the stores, seeds were not put out on display untill "all the stores got them at one time" Which means Walmart in New York started selling seeds in April. Also in South Florida, according to thier "program" in April . . . months too late for Florida gardeners ! You will probably get seeds in stores in Tenn. in April, however . . . Home Depot here in Puerto Rico already has the full display of seeds from Asters to Zuccini ! I think the packs are 1.25 each. If you want to get an early start, I would be glad to pick up packs of seeds at cost plus postage for anyone Bananas.

I don't know why these people up North never get too excited about planting bananas and alocasia until it's mid-winter and then get frustrated with us warm weather states because we can. We have problems also like Logos with his wife in bed with three cats. It was 40 degrees here last night and my wife was in bed with an overgrown blond cockerspaniel and a 2 year old muscle-bound pitt bull who has to sleep under the covers. It warms back up to 80 degrees every day.....but she keeps the air conditioner thermostat on 69 and she wears a mask hooked up to a machine because she has a sleeping disorder. And you guys think you have a problem with little ice storms and you bananas getting frost-bite. My heart goes out to Logos. If it gets any colder, I'm going to move down South.

i really cant say too much on this subject, my banana bunch sleeps in the bed with me(7 cats included) and i do this to keep warm.it stays 70-75* f in the banana room, and 68-69 *f in the house. so i can understand the whole sleep in the bed thing. is it the fact you have to share your spouse, or having to share your bed??? :bananarow: :bananarow:

Personally, I think it's the other way around. I DO get excited about planting bananas, whether it's in the spring or the winter. AND I DON'T get frustrated with you warm weather states. . . . I do take appropriate measures when cold weather sets in. Though sometimes, I can be caught off guard when the weather changes too soon. . . . or, if I'm away on an out of state assignment. I would naturally be envious of anyone who would not need to do these things. But if it were to frustrate me, I'd be back in the Philippines! Then I can not enjoy just terrific bananas that are not available here, but, also, terrific fruits that would be otherwise considered "exotic" here. How about several bunches of tree ripened Lansones? Or, Pico mango?

Yeah. I know you didn't ask me . . . . but I am a husband of 43 and a half years. And the only thing that comes between me and my wife in bed were our babies when they were infants. . . . . . and our first grandson, whom we are raising(he just turned 17 last Thanksgiving day). Now occasionally, the newer grandchildren as well, when are graced by their presence when their parents want to rest a little for a couple of nights, or so.

I don't know about dogs, but with our kids and grandkids, they would fall asleep on my chest in the evening. And after I put them between my wife and I, they're good for the night until 6:30 or 7:00 AM. No feeding, no diaper changing, no crying at night. And we have 5 kids, plus the grandson!

Oh! When we had dogs (Borzoi, Golden Retriever, and Black Lab, over various periods), they had their own beds. . . . . and I thought they were pretty happy with the arrangement. Besides, the Borzoi is bigger than a Shetland Pony!

All I can say is to each its own.
If you are happy, then do it.
I have cats and I had dogs and fishes. And I have an African grey that will converse with you but specially with my wife.
But I have ashma too. So my bed is out of the question.
And I have 3 teenagers, all boys.
I ended up taking care of all our adopted children after my sons lost their interest. We got them when my kids are kids. Now they have girlfriends.
How time flies.

well the fact that you have ashma is a good reason not to let them in the bed! sorry to hear that.at one time i had an 8 ft iguana that slept in the bed w/ me, 3 cats, 1 dog,and a husband. he(the husband) didnt like the idea of sharring the bed. so we remidied the situation....i had the cats and the lizard longer then i had him and i told him if he didnt like it he could ride the couch. he was a butthead anyway. he said the couch was lumpy.when we moved north merlin(iguana) went to live w/ a friend who had a arboritium in his house and he had a little girl iguana. i didnt want to change merlins climate so he still lives in fl, i miss him. i dont miss the ex.
