I thought this picture looked neat. The outside temps were 5 below zero when this was taken, The plants keep me sane during the winter months.

Very nice! Your plants look very healthy. Is that a mist line I see, or is it a string of lights? Hard to tell. Do you have an overall shot of your greenhouse, and did you build it yourself? Thanks.

Yes, I was wondering the same thing. What are those strings for and there seem to have some Christmas lights passing across the plants.

Thanks!
The answer is yes to all! I have a misting system, drip irrigation and lights. The greenhouse is on the side of my shop/barn. Trust me, it's nothing fancy. It works well though! It's been a 2 year project and I'm going to add on another 1000 sq ft. this spring. I'll try to post some more pics when I have time.

What a great looking GH and the bananas look so healthy. You said it was minus 5; when do you begin using the mister?

Hi,
The strings are drip irrigation lines and the red things are weights to hold the lines in the root zone. I have to move my plants every 3 weeks cause they're growing so fast, and in this picture I didn't put the lines back in the plants yet.

I have the mist timer set to mist for 2 minutes 8 times a day or every hour of sunlight. It was -5 outside and 71 in the greenhouse.

Thanks everyone for the kind comments. Here's an overhead view of the room. It has 250 mixed variety of musa plants, 2 palm trees, 12 tomato plants, 24 brocoli plants, and 1 pink lady apple tree.

2 layers. I used the strong Polycarbonate panels on the outside, then I wrapped the inside (or underside) with the cheap plastic stuff to help insulate it. I'm glad I used the panels because I have about 3 inches of snow and ice hanging over the edge.

Did you order it through mail or local store?
How much are they?
Thanks in advance.

Bencelest,
I purchased all the materials @ Home Depot. The panels are made from
suntuf http://www.suntuf.com
It was almost $600, I had to use the stronger panels because of the snow load in my area. The home depot was very helpful in my design and choosing the right materials.

Thanks a lot .
That's not high. It's affordable. compared to a ready made GH.
You help me a great lot.
Thanks!

Benny, I used the Suntuf corrugated panels for my back porch patio cover and am very satisfied with the result. I didn't see any of the double wall greenhouse panels, but think for us in CA, we can get by with just the corrugated Polycarbonate.

Thanks for another good info Microfarmer. I aim to check on those panels. Thanks to both of you.
I bought me a pergola at Costco and my problem is how I can cover the top with clear something for my dwarf bananas.
My thoughts are if I can cover the top only my bananas will be protected for the winter and will continue to grow as long as I can keep the tempt above 54*F most of the time. I am now in the process of assembling this gadget.

looks like a great set up. how are you heating it?
71F must cost a fortune!
I've just been out to my ploytunnel, its -3C outside and +5C inside and I'm already dreading the next electric bill.

I've got a blow heater controlled by a remote radio stat set to 7C,. I'm planning on adding a humidistat controlled mister system in the spring. along with a timer controlled watering system.

can't wait for the days to start getting longer again.

How tall is the ceiling?

I wish i lived on top of a geothermal hot spring. Then i'd grow papayas and pineapples and mangoes!

Microfarmer:
WE are lucky enough to be in a very good zone where we can see snow and rainy season and swim in the ocean in a short distance.
But I salute those people who tried to grow tropical plants to a very unyielding places.

The natural gas bill is around $110/month in the winter. I've insulated all the sidewalls and endwalls which blocks out the sun, but it holds in heat. That hurts my plants not getting all the natural sunlight so I use lighting as well. At todays energy prices it is cheaper insulate and run lights rather than burn more natural gas. The roof is on a slope the high end is 13' tall and the low is 6'.
