If I loose power very long I'm afraid I'll lose everything in the greenhouse. Just wonderin. I'll keep pearin out the window in hopes it will stop.:islandsharkbanana:

do you have any tarp blankets like movers use? you could use those in the greenhouse and make like t-p or tent for your nanas. it might just be a little protection if your electricity goes out. i guess any blanket would work.

Looks like your getting it worse than us. We are getting a freezing mist, but it ends up more as ice pellets. Monday looks like we will get a break, but Tuesday isn't looking good :(

First thing I would do is open the door to your house and turn up the furnace...unless you have electric heat...
:0521: Freezing rain coating your GH will, in effect, form an insulating blanket, unless it melts, then all bets are off.
:2730: Put some water in the greenhouse. Lots of it!! Fill up every cooler, bucket, storage container, and old milk jug you can find and spread them around inside the GH. It will keep the temps up as it will take longer for the GH (and water) to get to the freezing point. It will also protect the corms in containers if put around the containers. I have been collecting old milk jugs to line my GH back wall just for this reason. I'll put shelves for them to sit on and I will not have to go the heater route. Of course I don't have to deal with extended freezes out here...
You might also want to try one of the catylytic propane heaters you can get from you local Lowe's or Home Despot. It clamps to the top of the propane tank and will keep a 10x12' greenhouse above 50 degrees with no problems and might push the temps higher. My local HD is selling propane refills for under 17 bucks. Add a small battery powered fan like they sell for RV's that are powered by a 12 volt battery, running on low for circulation to eliminate the coldest spots.
If you don't have a lot of extra GH space, use a propane powered turkey fryer full of water. I brew beer on a propane fired turkey fryer base that holds a 15.5 gallon beer keg with the top cut out as my brew kettle. Bring the water to a boil in the greenhouse every evening and then just shut off the propane burner and walk away. Heck, just the heating rpocess will warm up the GH, but the hot water will keep a greenhouse warm all night. Bring it to a boil every night til your power comes back up. Heck, It might just get you into homebrewing...
:bananas_b :nanadrink:
The sun will help you alot thru the day. Leave the door open to let the GH air out for about 5-15 minutes during the day to drop the CO2 concentration if it worries you or you like to tend the bananas and will spend some time out there, but the plants will do fine with elevated CO2 (3-5X as much as in the atmoshere) and actually grow faster... Just remember that CO2 sinks and will be in higher concentration at the floor. The circulation fan will help keep it more even up by the leaves.
You don't need to try to keep the temp up to 70, just above freezing and preferably above 50 degrees will do it til the emergency is over and you can resume your electric heater.
Hope some of this helps someone...good luck....:coldbanana:
Jeff
P.s. If your power is already out, then I don't think you'll get this message...
We have already lost one good size limb and some smaller ones. I’m sure more will follow. The forecast is not looking good for us. After the ice storm we had last year this one is really making me nervous! Thankfully we have wood heat so if we loose power at least we won’t freeze.

Thanx for all the help and support everyone! All right so far but more is just starting up. I can just stand outside and listen to the tree's crash one after another, how sad. I already called into work as it's a 30 mile trip and bought a 6pack for the evening. I just informed my nervous wife that the Siam is coming with us. It won't be lost even if I have to cuddle with it to keep it warm. She just laughs at me. James hang in there bud, I know your getting hit too. Hopefully your not one of the 40,000 w/out power. Maybe the temps will be warmer tomorrow and some of this will melt off. I'll cross my fingers and hope for the best.-Nate:dancinpup:

I know this isn't very helpful for right now, but if you can't afford a generator (best option), then at least get a kerosene heater and some kerosene and have it designated for the greenhouse, and ready all winter. You might get a little leaf damage from the fumes on some sensitive plants like poinsettias, plumerias, but I can keep my 20x20 above freezing with one of those big round ones.

Woke up last night around 4 with no power. Me and the family cuddled up till the sun came up (21 degrees). Then I got the propane heater goin in the house and brought all the plants in. Around 10 the power came on "thank god" and we thought we were fine. My parents came over to shower and hang out for a while, theirs had been out for 24hrs already. Left the plants in just to be safe and sure enough, at 1 it went out again. A giant limb nailed the wire. Finally got it back around 6 and hopefully it will stay on. Hope everyone else who got hit is O.K. there are still a LOT of people without power.:03:

I'M BACK BABY!
I have no power at my house and no phone... both were ripped off my house by a rather large tree. The elm that was in my back yard is now laying down from fence to fence (took out one side of the fence in fact) 200,000 some odd people with out power in the Tulsa metro area.
Our Dispatch lost power to our computers last night and we were short handed due to the weather so I had to stay for 17 hrs and literally put out hundreds (possibly over a thousand) calls to police and fire. It is still very bad here and we may be due for some more later this evening... I have no internet at my house so I may not be on here for a while.
Thank you for all the support... good news is that our house is heated by gas so we have heat and hot water.
Nate hang in there buddy, as soon as I get my internet back up I am looking for a place in Fl. (seriously not joking)
Regards to all

Remember, you ice storm people, all those tree limbs are a great source of building material for twig furniture, trellises, etc.
I made a ton of stuff after our ice storm a few years ago. Chairs, loveseats, planters, trellis pieces, garden arches, a gazebo. So don't forget to sort through your brush for useable pieces.
I have pictures of some of my projects in this webshots album; if you want to see them.

in case that doesn't work, I'm not always that computer savvy, just go to webshots.com and look for username sandy0225, it's in the twig furniture and projects album. You can look at the other ones too if you want.

I'm feelin for yall. Thankfully we have not lost power yet. Right now my driveway is a skating rink and it's raining outside. The rain isn't making a dent in the ice. The skating rink laughed at a 50lb bag of rock salt yesterday!!!!!! Desperate times call for desperate measures...........Thinking about dynamite.....hmmmmmmmm
On the lighter side, my cat saw a squirrel across the yard and tried to go after it.......I think even the squirrel was laughing as the cat was spinning in circles.... lmao:gif_esqui

I am very thankful the ice we got Sunday was not that bad.. or could be that all the trees that would have broke power lines were taken out last winter or the early spring before.. no power outage here.. just enough ice to keep kids home Monday..
I can feel for those with out power right now..
They kept saying we would get more.. but I have only seen a few snow flakes.. and some plane rain..
Good luck to all in the heartland enduring the nasty weather!!! my prayers are with you!!

Sandy; I really like the gazebo.
For all of you suffering with the ice;
Good luck. It finally got warm enough so that snow flakes melted just above the ground then froze on contact with the streets, sidewalks etc. We got a tiny taste of what you were experiencing.

Well, me and the fam survived the 2007 ice storm with only minor damage. We lost our power 3 different times, slept in the cold, missed three days of work, lost a lot of tree's, but all the plants survived. I had to bring everything in and heat with a small propane heater but that dude kept me and the fam warm! I've got everything back in the greenhouse now after a good watering and some pruning. I'll be cleaning up and burning limbs till spring but all in all we were lucky. We got hit pretty good but not near as bad as others. I know OK got hammered an parts of MO did too, just the corner of Kansas mainly. I hope everyone else made it through without too much loss. I'm sure there are some who are still w/out power and that really sucks!! Thanx for all the prayers and support everyone!! I'm posting a few pics of around my neighborhood. The farther I ventured the more damage I saw but these should give you the magnitude of the storm. I'm ready for SPRING!!!!!!!!!!!:2791: :2223: :2237:

BACK AGAIN BABY!!!
Just got power yesterday but phone lines are still down so net usage has been scarce. I probably won't be hooked back up until next week sometime.
Glad to hear you pulled through OK Nate!... Hope y'all don't have to endure much of this next round coming in. they are predicting 1-6 inches of snow for us... which really isn't that bad it is just annoying since we just got through with this ice and just started clean up and recovery.
Everyone else who has been affected by this, good luck and hope you pull through it with as little trouble as possible. I know I have been lucky compared to some on my street with trees falling through their homes.
Regards,
-James-
