I operate a nursery offering popular tropicals to local garden centers here in Puerto Rico. The same problem exist here as I experienced in Florida: Many garden centers are run by people who are in it for the money and "do not know much about plants" !! #x**x Almost every time I come up with a new plant to offer . . . I get a funy look, like who am I to intraduce a new plant ? The people who's occupation it is to offer unusual plants to the public simply cannot be bothered or again . . know nothing about plants !!
The result of this garden center neglect is that many unusual plants are never seen or available to the public.

So . . . aside from my wholesale business I have established a web-site to offer plants that I enjoy and like to share.

I hope it is not offensive or too commercial to offer here plants for sale that I have in such abundance and am happy to share for prices that are just high enough to cover the cost of growing and collecting. I am happy to go further than just selling . . . I will do my best to search out and hopefully find "the plants you are looking for" from other local collectors.

Can you give some info on the PHILODENDRON IMBE "Burle Marx"? Mostly in regards to how hardy it is. Also, are you open to trading plants if the right trade comes along? Thanks

I used to be into experimenting to find more cold hardy plants when I was still in Florida. I hated that onece each year we had to get out in the middle of the night to cover plants. There are lots of tropicals that for odd evolutionary reasons can take the cold, like Chinese Fan Palm (15*f.) etc.

Its a general rule that if the Philodendron has a stiff durable feeling leaf, it is more cold hardy. Phil. Imbe is native to central southern areas of Brazil. It grows in areas with a heavy rainy season that turns arid in the Brazilian winter. Drought resistant plants are also more likely to withstand cold. I saw this plant growing in a landscape in full Sun in Orlando Florida. Thats zone 9a ? Orlando get a brief freez about twice a year. I think the low elevations of Louisiana may be safe if the area is surrounded with foliage or forest.
I would be happy to trade ! I need cutting material of Confederate Jasmine. (Trachelospermum jasminoides). If you have none (shame on y'all). You could buy it and send me rooted plants. I need a lot of it, so we would have to trade in your favor for 2 or 3 others off my list plus a lot of P. imbe.

I'll look for you here or on my e-mail. Thanks for reply . . . Logos

Jasminum nitidum - 'Angelwing Jasmine' is on my list of plants that I'm looking for. But don't have Jasmine of any kind right now. I will be buying some plants in the spring and I'll be sure to keep you in mind. Here is a link to my trade list on Gardenweb in case you see anything else you may be looking for.

Jason . . . I have a plant that is just like Monstera delisiosa with large leaves split deeply. M. delisiosa grows very thick heavy short vines and likes to fall over rather than to climb. A beautiful plant but "huge" I have a heavy vining type with split leaves except that it climbs willingly on a post or wall. (It is not Friedricklandia)(which is a week grower). However this like M. delisiosa is not a Philo., its related to Pothos. Epipremnum pinnata Mabe you can find it in "Tropicana" or other reference ?

Also, check out discription of Philodendron imbe "Burle Marx" on web-site w. plantcollectors. com

Also . . . All Palms are grown from seed and never variegate. It is possible a Palm may pup a sport with variegation but I have never seen one. (someone please correct me if wrong).

SOUTHLATROPICAL . . . . Philadendron selloum is native to northern Argentina at about the same temp zone as New Orleans. If your bananas occationally freez then you should cover the selloum. Zanadoo is a cultivar that looks good in a pot, but wwhen it gets to be 2 or 3 years old it begins to deform and get leggy and unhealthy.

Jasmine . . . From one state to another they are all called "Star Jasmine"
To add to the problem the botanical names of several have been officially changes in the last ten years. Jasmine nitida is one that has been changed, so there is no way to call them by common names. However . . .

Star Jasmine: Jasminium laurifolium / Sweet odor random flowers on a bushy plant with occational vines spreading. Easily identified by its "red bud" befor flower opening. Flowers very random in groups of few. Sweet odor.

Confederate Jasmine: Trachylospernum jasminoides / Dark green vining and climbing plant with dense clusters of tiney white stars in Spring and Summer.

Downey Jasmine: Bot. ? The only Jas with FUZZY leaves. A bushy plant with occationally spreading branches. Blooms Fall and Winter with many tiney white stars with no odor.

bought a one gallon pot of solid green monstera at the gh friday for 15.00.( hes rooting varigated and they will be ready in 6 wks!yahoo) i want to propagate it into more plants.the runner roots off the bottom of the vines are between 12-28 inches long. i can take leaf cuttings just like a phili( put it in water and let it root). but i dont want to do it that way. can i run the vine( still attached to the mom)) across a pot and plant the roots in dirt, or should i just go ahead and do stem cuttings and put them in dirt to root. would it be possible to cut the roots only and plant them in a pot, would it root that way? i have read 15 articles and each one says something different.

EVERYBODY AND MRS. KITTY . . . PLEASE FORGIVE ME, I HAVE BEEN WORKING SO HARD IN THE NURSERY THAT I JUST FALL ASLEEP WHEN I GET TO THE HOUSE AND HAVE NEGLECTED MY FRIENDS ON BANANA !!!

About your Monstera (If it is branching it may not be Monstera) ($15.00 for a one gallon pot, your filthy rich or folish !!). Lay the runner across another pot of highly loose aerated soil, cover a section with one leaf with a glob of Spagnum Moss, it will root within two weeks, then cut off.

ALSO . . . I HAVE DISCOVERED A GREAT WAY TO TRADE . . . I just mailed off a priority mail box, up to 9.00 now . . . to a man in N. Carolina full of tropicals and in return he ordered a book from Amazon. com ( I donate books to the local Library for kids that want to learn English). Amazon pays the postage, so for about 12.00 the man got his plants (at least 30.00 worth) and did not have to pay the P.O. 9.00 !! So . . . now I'm trading books for plants . . . anyone interested ?

There are variegated palms which are Japanese cultivars of Rhapis Excelsa. They are dwarf named varieties and usually very pricey. I have a variegated form, Ayanishiki. Here's a link with some of the forms shown.

I'm also a palm nut, lol.

Once I discovered that you can fit more unusual dwarf plants in a small apartment, I just went nuts. Can't wait to fill up all that empty (?) space with more dwarf bananas!! You're welcome for the site.
