Well, we had some high winds when the latest cold front came through Sunday night and it blew my Orinoco over, even though it was staked. So I went ahead and cut the stalk of fruit off (a nice hand of about 40 or so fruit...not bad for SE TX). It was predicted to get down to about 32-33 for our area so I decided I might as well. They had been on there since sometime in Aug. so I think they'll be OK. They are now on top of my 'fridge waiting to ripen.
Anyhow...about two weeks ago I couldn't resist any longer and I cut one of the fruit off and brought into the house to see if it would go ahead and ripen. It had remained green the whole time so last night I decided to peel it some to see what the fruit looked like and it was about like peeling a very green plantain. So I decided to cut it up in thin slices and fry it in some oil. It turned out rather bland. I figured being a dessert banana it would at least be a little sweet. It probably just hadn't developed enough sugars yet. So rather than waste what I'd cooked, I sprinkled the slices with a little sugar and some cinnamon and it wasn't too bad. I think I'll be a little more patient now, though, and let them ripen up so that I can eat the rest the way they were meant to be eaten. Can't blame a guy for trying though!

WOW Thanks, I learned something new today that i hadnt thought about-Should it ever happen!!! is how long that stalk of bananas should be on there before you cut them., and then how long the rippening process is, ahhhhh...more research. Iam so lovin' this:) I guess when you are as new to bananas as iam, its like getting a new toy! Everything about the bananas is interesting and exciting to me. Its amazing.... I have zoom eyes and I can spot them everywhere and anywhere! Bananaman at least you tried. heck I would of too! LOL Have a nice day!:pinwheelnaner:

Well, let's just say that they weren't as good as the normal tostones I make from actual plantains, but I just couldn't see throwing it away. My wife was sceptical (as usual) but I was determined to try it anyway. They would have been almost tasteless had I not added the sugar and cinnamon. I think I could tweak the "recipe" a bit an come up with something pretty good. In fact, I think it would be really good with a plantain that is already a bit ripe (sweeter) and serve them for dessert! I'll post it here if I ever try that, or if anyone else has tried that let us know.

I did the same thing,,,,, take one off...wait a while....OHH, it's still green...can't wait anylonger...peel it and yuk!. :2732: OK, I'll let the rest ripen...OOOHHH, it's taking so long!!!! They finally ripened and were very sweet! Not sure what kind they are, have to wait till next year flowers!

I didn't know about frying it, though. Learn something new every day!
