so i go to walmart to buy some groceries...got to have nanas. pick the prettiest bunch.i turn to the side and they have BABY nanas. their like 3 inches long. i grabbed a bunch.my youngest who is 16, already thinks im bananas..tells me that i have to be crazy to buy bananas that are not fully formed. it looks like a banana, it smells like a banana, it must be a banana. my thinking anyway. so i bring them home and want to eat one, but their green.guess ill have to pull out the paper sack. they are almost to cute to eat....nah! :bebe: i have never seen bananas that little! just thought id share my amazing adventure at walmart.

I hardly venture anywhere near Walmart at this time of year! :2141:
Except around 11 PM. When you can move through the aisles. :)
We have a place nearby that carries the "baby bananas". When they have them I buy them. They seem much sweeter to me. I am so hoping for some baby bananas of my own someday. :2758:

Ive seen the little yellow ones for a long time at different stores every one in a while but just recently I saw some little red bananas at walmart. It didn't really say what they where, Well they had a name but didn't seam to be very relevant to what they came off of and now I forget what they where called.

They where about half the size of a regular store banana but a nice deep reddish purple.

these were green and the only name they had on them was banana minis. if they would of had the reds i probably would have bought most of them just to see what they taste like. unfortunatly i have to wait till these ripen to taste them.

If they are the Chiquita brand, the variety is Pisang Mas. I emailed them and asked them about it when I found them at our Wal-Mart a few months ago.

i just found out that they have the minis in red at walmart in algood, tn. and yes that is the name of the city. ha ha ha. it didnt say chiquita on the sticker it just said banana minis. mine are almost ripe. i got organic nanas at foodlion the other nite. i love those, they were not as sweet as the reg nanas. and i had my first taste of a persimmon the other nite. i have had to fight to get kroger to sell papya. they have all kinds of oranges, grapefruits, apples(yuck),grapes, but when it comes down the the tropical fruit, you have to fight to get it. im wanting to try blood oranges and they look at me like im crazy. what is a blood orange? is all i hear. so getting them here might take another year.:2687:

I sometimes see smaller varieties of bananas here in the Houston area too. I've seen Kroger carry a small reddish variety (I thought it might be Dw. Red, but maybe not). I went to get some one time and then, of course, they didn't have any. I plan to buy some the next time I come across them. The Wal-Mart closest to me never has anything other than regular Grand Nain or Cavendish varieties.

Mskitty, if you ever do get your hands on a blood orange you'll love it! A former co-worker of mine grows them and they are hands-down the best tasting orange I've ever had!

Brent, they are Dwarf Red.

Note my ignorance:
Sorry that they're blurry. It's a very old camera!

The meat is light pink in the center, and the flesh is thin.:gif_rojo:

The meat is the flesh, and the "flesh" as I called it is the "Peel"

lol :09: What can I say...

The ones I saw at walmart where much darker then the ones pictured in that thread. They where a little longer also.

They had some red bananas at our local Ralphs today. They're bigger than the dwarf reds that I get at another local place... Label says "Ecuador Bonita #4236".
They are almost the same size as (yellow) "Chiquita #4011" that I bought a couple of days ago.
Oh, for the days that Bananas were just bananas... :exercisenaner:

I saw the Lil minis at Walmart yesterday. Pretty cute little guys. I should have bought some I guess. Maybe next time I build up enough courage to venture there I will.

they were really, really good!the more ripe they are the sweeter they taste. you should get u some. yummy yummy:2748:. i even ate one that was partly green to see what it tasted like....i dont recomend that! i tried them at each stage of ripeness. with the big nanas i dont like them till the skins have speckle spots. i like the lil ones with the speckly spots too.

drooling from queensland

stores only stock cavendish and we can legally grow only a few banana varieties at home

nothing like the variety you can get over seas
