this is where i need some expert opinions. the high color mini musa that i got yesterday, has 4 pups. should i remove the pups and replant them, or should i just move all 5 into a bigger pot till spring?

Hey Ms Kitty...
I'm no expert, but with all the stress of the move and this cool/low light time of year, I would leave them alone. This is how they are used to growing and the less stress the better!:pinkskirtnaner:

ya, just leave them alone until spring at the very least, and I would say only take them off if you want more plants. Taking off pups can increase yields, however, this variety isn't really a heavy producer to begin with, and if its anything like its brother the Super Dward Cavendish, it will not welcome having its pups being taken off and having to grow in a container indoors.

Ya know Misskitty, Iam very new to this banana growing bizness, and i say to leave them like they are until spring. Iam in Z6 Ohio. I just started growing these nanners the last weekend of july2007. Ive learned so far, they dont like damp feet at all!!!!!!!!!!!! while in the house. Just dont water and mist the leaves, and mist the stem like 2x aday. but not to much on the stem. the moisture can collect in the old leaves and cause some black rotting on the stem. I see that i do need perlite for the soil to keep it a lil "Fluffy". Jared you are right! We do need some kind of forum something to educate and talk about soil, compost, needs of banana growing, etc. At least I do. We in the midwest have got through Nov2007, 6 more months to go. I didnt realize what a challenge I was in for.WHoooWHeeeeee!!!! Next year my GH will have heat and lights!! Its all good...................MG:cool:

i use 1-bag (2 cu.ft) of miricle-go potting MIX, 1-8 qt.bag cactus/citrus mix, and 1-8 qt bag of perilite.mix it all together and we have lite and fluffy dirt cake! lol. sometimes i might add anoter 1/2 bag of perilite. depends on my mood. they have a humidifier(gets filled w/ filtered water 2x's a day, and they have lites. i spray mist just the leaves and i dont water till the dirt is almost dry 2 inches in the pot. and when i water they get filtered water. not like i spoil my nanas or anything.and when i feed them they get shredded cabbage, spinach, banana peels, and lots of green food.i feed them about every 2 wks.:2223:. i was just a little concerned because there are 5 trees in a 1-gallon pot, and you cant stick your finger in the dirt....its all roots. i have to cut a few leaves off the one pup, their brown and icky.( they go in my inside compost.) thank you very much for your info. i appriciate it. :08:

Ms Kitty, how do you compost inside the house? is there a special bucket with air tight lid or something? do you stir it up? how long does it take to breakdown? Do tell. MG:rappinnana: I just cant imagine that in the house.:drum: thankyou for any info.............

i have it in a plastic bucket, it sits on the kitchen counter i dont have a lid for it.. believe it or not, it dosent smell that bad.( i tolorate it for my nanas sake.) i sit it in the sun on the counter and i stir it every time i walk past it. however i dont compost the cabbage,or spent buds off of inside flowes, or the spinach, nor cut off leaves. (its shredded and i cut up the spinach). i water the nana and then i just put that around (not touching the stalk) on top of the dirt.when i do it this way it absorbs into the dirt by itself. fruit peels, broccoli stems, onion peels, nana peels, etc... i chop it up and throw into the bucket. my cats dont even get into it. i have more problems with my kids saying mom thats gross! if the bucket is set in the sun it takes about a week to a week and a half to get it just right. it seems to be working very well, i have had the two new leaves on charlie open up within the last week, and the one that i got from mediahound has a total new growth of 1/2 an inch, since i got it. one suggestion: if you dont want to chop.....use a food processor: it saves the hands. happy composting. :baloonnaner:

We had something like that as kids back in the sixties up north. We would clean our dinner plates into it each night. Red

we couldnt leave the table till everything green was gone from our plates. and when your young, everything that isnt fried, is green. we went allowed to throw anything away. so you learn to take little bits of everything "green".lol

it has sand in it and to grow citrus and cactus it has to drain very well. nanas need good drainage, also it is a lite mix. so i figured if its good for growing citrus it should be ok for nanas.and plus the cactus/citrus dirt smells sweet to me. and please dont ask me if i sniff the dirt....i wont answer that question!

:choochoo: Boy o' boy you had me rollin' and laughing. That should go in the thread "you might be a banana fiend if...", oh yea you do that! hahahahaha.I cant type for laughin'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You always make me laugh. THANKYOU!!:nanawhopp: But on the real......I mix in playsand with their soil, and i got some milorganite,& miracle grow potting soil. Its in my flowerbeds outside as well as in some pots in the basement. I gotta get that perlite to be ready for the spring. That will be easy just as soon as i get them through the winter! This is a challenge, but kinda fun tho. Thankyou for all your help and quick responses. Magicgreen:jumpingonbednaner:

lowes has 8 qt.bags of perilite for 3.97 a bag in stock now. i need to get some more. i have a 2 cubic ft. bag of miricle gro soil mix in the corner of the den. yes its in the house. keeps bugs out. ive got to get more cactus mix and perilite. maybe i should just move everything out of my den. mix up my dirt, throw it on the floor and really "grow my nanas in the house!" that would be kool. till i had to water them. ideas, ideas, ideas:0489:
