Hi everyone,

I was born in the uk and moved to South Africa :0515: with my parents in the 70s. I moved back to the uk 4 years ago - boy did I have an education in weather change! :2756:

I had a few banana trees in my SA garden but they were low maintenance and were just there all year round. Now I am trying to grow some here in the North East of England and have found they are anything but low maintenance in winter..its now cold and wet wet wet

I have cut them back and dug them out and have put them in the loft for the winter - on the advice on the threads in this forum - thanks guys!
I would have just left them in the ground.

Everyone I know has laughed when I tell them Im growing bananas and they think Im crazy....(maybe a little). The 2 I planted in April this year took off and reached about 5 foot high - I was really impressed and loved the look on my neighbours face when he saw them......hee hee hee wait till next year.

You guys are really helpful in the forum and I hope one day (after experience is obtained) I will be able to contribute to the site as well.

cheers and happy bananaring.....

Hi Kerrin. You should be fine growing nanas 'op north', just needing to protect them during winter. I know people growing nanas nicely in Yorkshire and elsewhere. Of course, us 'southern softies' have it easy :)

Welcome to the board!

Welcome Kerrin - know what you mean about the weather - ex-ZA, ex-UK. Another member in ZA is Gilbert D'Hollander, but my Afrikaans is a bit too rusty to chat much with him.

welcome to the forum! i love your attitude about nanas!:hiiiiyanana:. when yours start producing fruit, you should sit on your front stoop, and eat one right in front of him. maybe you will inspire him to start growing bananas.

Thanks you guys,

mskitty, I actually gave my neighbour one when I bought them - he put it in his conservatory because it said conservatory/patio plant on the label - he told me it wouldnt grow in the ground. Next time I went over it had hardly grown at all and looked sad. He then put it in the garden and it died. He obviously didnt talk to it about growing nicely and give the leaves a stoke like I did mine. (how sad does that sound!)lol

that sounds really bad! i play the radio for mine. they like classic rock.1970-1990. anything else and i lose a leaf. no just kidding about the leaf. he just probably looked at it and didnt say a word to it.thats probably why it died. its a sad day in nana tree land.:( . bananas are like puppies and most men, you talk nice to them and they do almost anything you want. sorry guys, but you know its true! ill get slammed on here for that comment.maybe you need to introduce him to the banana.org!
