Many years ago, while vacationing at a friend's house, in St. Lucia, I saw lots of bananas. When I asked what kind they were, and what they did with them, I was told they were Gros Michel, and they were shipped to the U. K. I was also told that they were a little smaller than the ones we usually get here in the U. S., because Britons didn't like huge bananas. I brought a couple of corms back with me, and planted them in a couple of redwood planters, in front of glass sliding doors in a finished basement with a suspended ceiling. When they started pushing the tiles out of the ceiling, I had to move them out of there. Here's a picture of me, on the island, with some Gros Michel.

I looked in th Wiki and saw a line, there, for Gros Michel, but I don't know how the Wiki works. If I had made this post on the Gros Michel line, in the Wiki, instead of here, (main page) would someone have to look in the Wiki to see it, or would it show up somewhere else also? It seems that not too many people look at the Wiki, as most of the lines say 'Never', under 'Last Post' and, of the two that have a post under them, I can't find that post anywhere else.

By the way, does anyone know the name of the commercial varieties most commonly found in stores here in the U. S.?

What a cool picture and story! I can see where the tops of some of the fruits got shaved from the machete. What ever happened to the plants from the corms you brought back?

This was the right place to post the story but it would be cool to get the picture and a blurb in the wiki. The wiki is a resource center that anyone can edit or add to. It takes some getting used to though.

The store bought nanners are mostly Cavendish and Grand Nain I believe.

Thank you. Mitchel. I hadn't noticed, until you mentioned it, that I had cut into some of the nanners. We had so many there, that it didn't matter. I guess I wasn't too experienced with the machete or, as they called it, the cutlass. (British, at the time; independent now)
The people we stayed with were my wife's boss, and his wife. My wife is an operating room supervisor - he was the chief of surgery. At his home here, they had an indoor pool. One end of the room was up against the house. The one side was a stone wall, about 16 feet high, and the other end, and other side consisted of a series of sliding glass doors. The lean-to type roof was clear polycarbonate. When the plants got too big for us, we brought them there, and he actually got fruit on them. (Brought him a pineapple also, and that fruited too)
In the picture, the tree on the left is a papaya, with some fruit at the top.

I'll put something in the wiki, also.

I'll upload the picture. Should I upload it to the wiki, or to the photo gallery? I also have a few more picures of basjoo, lasiocarpa, Dwarf Cavendish, and High Color Mini.

John, if you upload it to your gallery you can copy the code for
the WIKI . When you click on the picture you will see the code.
When you edit a page in the WIKI you can Paste it.
Sometimes its handy to open 2 sessions to copy and paste if you
want to add more pictures.
If its in your gallery I can do it also if you want.
