Yes I will have 20 hands of Ae Ae ripening in the next few weeks. It's too much for the family to consume. I will post when they are ripe enough to pick and people can stop by for a hand. Members who know were I live just let me know that you will come by. Others can send a private message and I will tell you where to go. Wow I have been telling people were to go for a long time, but this is a positive 'were to go'.
With so much to eat, I need Ae Ae recipes. If you have a good recipe please send it to me and the best ones will be given an orchid plant. Mature divisions of one of the plants marked 'An Ae
Ae prize' The pictures are on my site:

Sorry, no plants or fruit will be sent by post. You have to be here.

A friend of mine from Puerto Rico says Ae Ae makes some of the best dried bananas. He is on sabattical right now nad living near me and gave me some to try a month or so ago and I thought it was great. They cut it in slices lengthwise and dried these long slices to the point where they were still chewy.
Congrats, Jordon! :D

miss anna, i did a boo-boo. i asked a nurseryman if he could get "ae ae". he said he didnt know but hed look into it.....now after seeing the koolist nanas in the world, thats at the top of my ever growing wish list. so now i wait. and even though i dont have anyone to throw a fit about how many nanas i have or how much money i spend.....i just dont know how i can justify 125.-200. for one single nana tree. let me rephrase that, one of the most koolist single nana trees ive seen! if i think hard enough, i might be able to justify it by.....

im not sure it would survive in my neck of the woods, unless it was in a pot in the house. its like 28-30 degrees here tonight.but dont think if i had one it would have its own lights, its own ph. test kit.....you know what i mean, dont ya?:0496:

After reading some replies, I started to think. I grow the Ae Ae along with mango avocado and a few things that are rare. I wish I could grow apples and pears but the puny ones that grow here are not worth growing. I know better then to grow tulips in Coral Gables. I admire people in temperate climates that grow tropical plants. Bananas are a good choice. But the Ae Ae is really a problematic. Longwood Garden grew the Ae Ae for many years and then lost it. I gave them one and they kept it alive for 3 years. If they have a problem, think what a problem it is for one person to grow it. At this time I want more people to grow it in a climate that is to the plants liking. If the warming keeps up, many of you will be able to grow the Ae Ae.
Forty five years ago I tried to grow breadfruit. We were too cold for it and I lost it(I tried twice). This year I planted a breadfruit with great hopes of success. There is a home in the area that has a large one with fruit. I am so sure that I am collecting recipes.

MsKitty,
You should be able to grow Paw-paws (Asimina triloba) in your area; they are quite hardy. We had tons of them in the woods of Western KY where I grew up.
The lemon you mentioned sounds like 'Ponderosa'. It gets to be about the size of a grapefruit! Quite impressive! When I used to live in St. Louis I got seed from one of them and have been growing it in a pot for about 6 years now. No fruit yet but it should be getting about time. Citrus grown from seed always takes awhile to fruit as opposed to one's started from cuttings.

I figure my odds are 50% from what I've read so I will soon have three good size Ae Ae potted and warm inside my shop and will hope for the best and plant them out in late April or May. I plan to have an overhead misting system which should help with our dry climate. I will probabl plant the Ae Ae in the center of my group of about 30 bananas (26 varieties) to baby them even more. If I get pups I will pot some up and bring them inside late next fall. If not, I will probably whack the Ae Ae back, pot them up, and bring them back inside and hope for pups and fruit the following year. I hope to have a greenhouse some day and would eventually keep them in there for part of the year. I have more resources than most and think it's worth a try. I don't disagree at all with your efforts to get them more established there in Floriday, Jordon, and admire your brother's program! :) I just wish you were closer so I could try some fruit! ;)

I don't know any eating banana that produces a seed. No seeds on the Ae Ae and no meristem cloning at this point. It's one pup at a time.

Ae-Ae's are infertile and do not produce seeds. They must be reproduced asexually.

Harvey, I knew that Chris took some pictures, but I was surprised with how many. The first picture was one of the 4 pups this year(only 3 pups were given, I kept the fourth - the smallest). When I saw it I thought, who is growing this Ae Ae that well. I truly didn't know that my pup looked that good. Thank you for letting me see my garden in some one else's eyes. I reminded when our daughter was growing up. I never thought that she was extra good looking. But when she married and left the house I looked at some of her pictures, by golly she looked fantastic, still does.
If you didn't look at picture and like Ae Ae bananas please look at these. When I viewed the pictures they started in the middle, so left and right.

Thanks for the additional information, Jordon. I was wondering if that Ae Ae was your last small pup which you didn't think would survive. Great job! I can only hope to do half as well with ones that are much bigger to begin with. I may be picking up a couple of 4-5 footers next week which I bought a month or so ago if my travel plans work out like I hope. They'll go into pots and go into my cozy shop with my metal halide lamp. The one I have in a so-called 15 gallon pot right now received some potassium nitrate a few weeks ago because the last new leaf had too much white. It hasn't put out a new leaf yet since then because it is still cooler in my shop now than it was a month ago. Maybe I need a bigger heater. ;) (I have free gas, so why not?)

Chris I just looked at your slide show of my garden. I was amazed of the beauty of that fourth pup that I kept. But that was before the January cold snap. In the late fall I gave that pup potassium nitrate to increase its strength in the winter. But the new leaves did not have more green. The cold snap killed the center leaf (and apical growth). The pup never put up another leave. On March 16 08 I spotted two little pups. I now have two poor looking leaves on that fourth pup, but with hot weather the pups are growing fairly fast. The third pup popped up this week. Notice the little pups are much greener then normal, due to the posasssium. That's the only reason that they are likely to live. Jordon, I've been meaning to ask for some time - I see you have pots around your small pups before you dig them. What is that for? Have you already made a cut from the mother corm?
Great looking Ae Ae, thanks!

No one gets a pup until it is established in a pot. The first 4 to 6 weeks are very important. What you saw was pups that have been harvested and then put in a large pot. When it starts to mature some new leaves its ready to find a home for the pup. The pot is placed near the parent because that's were I have room.

Ahh, its a shame about the fourth pup. That january cold snap was the nastiest one since I'd moved out here. Lost a few of the smaller branches on my red cacao and dragged inside everything i could. covered stuff in towels, and set a space heater next to my sealingwax palm. Everything made it but it took some work.
i still think in the long run i want to get a few of these
Costco - Presto HeatDish Parabolic Heater Plus Footlight (http://tinyurl.com/3tsmxe) and wire them up to aim at targeted regions of the yard with the most sensitive stuff. if you ever get a chance to stand in front of these dishes its amazing how they focus the heat into a powerful beam that can target a specific area. hell of alot easier than dragging stuff inside.
i noticed that the humidity didnt drop a whole lot this year during cold fronts which kept leaf burn (at least for me) to a minimum.

There are people who grow AEAE further north that are very successfully. Its pretty arrogant to think you have to be in southern Florida to grow AEAE.
harveyc
04-18-2008, 10:04 PM
Wow, what prompted that response?
I'm working my butt off to grow my Ae Ae in NorCal (zone 9) and hope I succeed, but I have no doubt that they would have a better chance of survival in warmer climates like southern Florida, Hawaii, etc. Jordon has been growing Ae Ae for 40 years and is being very generous in giving away pups and he has every right to limit the recipients to somewhere near him for the sake of survival rate plus ease of transportation since he is giving away very large pups. He's told me he thinks I'll have some challenges in growing Ae Ae and he is right. I just hope I am up to the challenge.
Jordon has also told GATroops that his outdoor Ae Ae (in zone 9, I believe) is the best he's ever seen for an outdoor plant (or something to that effect). It's obvious there is no arrogance involved.
I do hope that the Ae Ae's brother project succeeds and there are eventually plants being shared outside of the local zone.
Cheers,
Harvey

Last November I had 20 hands of AeAe bananas to eat within two weeks. This year no fruit. I have cut off two flower stems to allow the pups to grow faster. It has worked better then I thought it would. Last year I gave out 3 pups and this year only 2 pups (and they were from the 4th pup that I kept) I hope to give out at least 6 pups by next mid summer. If your in the program area be sure you get in line. Sean and Jarred can you send me a jpg. of your Ae Ae? You hopefully will have some pups for nest summer.

Those are beautiful photos. I would love to try my hand at the Ae Ae here, but because I'd either have to dig it up each year, or keep it potted, I figure I'd be wasting my time. A finicky banana probably isn't worth the money at the moment - at least in my area.

Brent told me last year that when he was St. Louis the gardens there had Ae Ae that they would whack back year year and pot up and move into the growing houses until the following spring. It sounded like it was very successful and lots of pups were produced.
Plantaseeds, you don't have your location marked. To be eligible for the program, you need to be in south Florida. Just a FYI.

I thought there are members who have Ae'-Ae in your area. Scot and Pauly are in Vegas, and they have Ae'-Aes. I believe they are even in a warmer area than you. And Possibly colder, too, depending on what part of Vegas.
Think part shade and misters for humidification!

I can relate to Annas fear of investing in AeAe. There have been times here where I'd forget to water a shaded plant for one day, and the next day I've got yellowing leaves. I would hate to spend the money on AeAe for it to do terrible here! Yet Scott and Pauly give me hope, as my climate is much akin to Vegas. I'm just waiting to find one for the right price before I give it a shot. :ha: AeAe is truly the one plant that I think is too beautiful to NOT give a shot. Maybe I will find some in Hawaii next year if I can't convince the lass sooner that a $150.00 plant is a good investment.

Just my observation here... I have a friend who has like 10 Ae Ae's in Bangkok. They are planted on the ground outdoor in brightly lit areas. Some were under the shade of trees and all seem to be doing very well. So this plant is pretty heat tolerant as you know it really cooks in the summer there.
harveyc
10-11-2008, 10:25 AM
But Bangkok is humid, right? I think the main problem with high heat here in the western U.S. is that humidity is low and can dry out banana leaves. Need to make sure they are well-watered and, as some have done, maybe use misters.
Tog Tan
10-11-2008, 10:40 AM
Bangkok is decently humid except their sorching summer and dry cool winter. I did not take into the account of the dryness in certain parts of the States. Where I am the humidity is fine but if you go to Borneo, your sweat just stays on the exposed parts of your body and do not dry out. So, many of the plants from there can't even be grown here. Philippines is similar to Borneo and that's probably why the Ae Ae needs so much humidity since it originated from there. Kudos to the way you guys take care of your 'nanas.
