I would like to ask the members of this forum who have had the opportunity to sample different bananas, which they thought had the finest flavour? And why?

Moved to fruit for ya!

I'll answer this one in next year or two... there's so many more to taste before I start naming names!

I haven't tasted a LOT but of the 10 or so I have, I like Red Iholene and Raja Puri best so far. Ice Cream is up there too. These have a really noticible different taste. Dwarf Cav, Double Moahi, Misi Luki, most FHIA's all are about the same to me with just a hint of difference. Dwarf Orinoco are OK but nothing to rave about. BUT the great thing is they all taste better then store bought.

While I wait for my apple, icecream and ladyfinger to grow, I thought this thread would help me to draw up my wish list and decide what to go for next, as I am primarily interested in fruit. Dwarf Cav I know as that has fruited for me, and the other local varieties I have are also still too small to bloom.

I will put Red Iholene and Raja Puri on my list.

Thanks
Cassie

Also if there is the faintest chance that I might win the FHIA-17 competition - how would I know which to choose?

i spent hours on line last nite going over the different bananas they have on the list. go to encanto farms and you can review almost everything on the "list". i have narrowed my search to 3 types of banana, that way when i win, ill know which one i want. :2761:

I haven't really sampled tons of varieties either (maybe 20 or so), its rather difficult when you can't grow them. But of those, one of my favorite has been Mysore.

thats the truth. its people like that who are giving and care about others to make it even possible to tolorate the people who arent. and i have found that there are a lot of giving and caring people on this forum. and at first i was really skeptical. im not gonna mention any names but, these people know who they are. they have answered questions for me and gone way out of their way for me. and for that i say thank you. i always try to remember that, what you do in this life will come back to you. it doesnt matter if its good or bad, it comes back. thats why i always try to treat people with respect, dignity, and friendship. i say KUDOS to you and thanks.

In the tropics where I grew up there is one banana that is served only during special occasion because of its beauty and taste are so remarkable.
I never saw it mentioned here maybe because it can not be grown in semi tropic region.
It is called 'lacatan'. It is one of the best tasting banana I have ever tasted.

island cassie

Encanto Farms have it listed and spell it as "lacatan" and "lakatan" and they say it is delicious, so maybe one of these is yours? The first is from Jamaica and the second from the Philippines.

Yes, from the Philippines.
And there is one pomello there that tastes out of this world. It is called Davao pomello. The skin is so easy to peel, thin and the meat is so soft, yet firm and so sweet, the balance of sweet and tanginess is superb. The meat is so easy to peel from the skin. Once you start eating it, you'll never stop. No one has yet to develop that in here.
I am going to contact the firm regarding the Philippine lacatan now that I know I can grow bananas in my backyard.
Thanks for the info.

Benny, if you can be patient, I have a Lakatan. If it produces a pup this next spring we can work out something cheaply. Going Bananas wouldn't sell me one because they only had them potted and only ship tissue culture plants to Californai and I got mine from Jon Verdick (webebananas aka Pintagadiego).

Pisang Raja is very good, Mysore, Brazilian, Lakatan, Latundan, Senorita, Jamacan Red, Misi Luki & Silk are on my list (in no particular order) but the one that really stands out is an unamed hybrid of Honduran origin i had at a Costa Rican farm.

YOU are ON!!
Thanks for letting me know.
I'll guard it just as I guard the mahoi Joe Real gave me.
I put all of my potted bananas now inside my patio and I enclosed it with clear plastics.
The tempt might be the same as the outside but I think all of them will survive the lower tempt that is coming this Saturday.
The prediction will be 36 low.
CORRECTION: 34 F low

Ink cube - I try to keep my wish list small but it keeps growing! Thanks to all who have tasted different varieties for your input - much better than just reading about different flavours and by the spring I will have saved up enough to pay for the shipping!! lol

I tried some ripe bananas of my "KRU" variety for the first time.I was impressed with the flavor and texture. They have a nice, sweet, not over-powering flavor.I think this variety will be a keeper!:08:.Some of the fruit's skin SPLIT though, resulting in a few lost fruit.

greenie, is it normal for that type of nana to split? (ha ha no pun intended) im still trying to get my wish list together for santa for next year. and im trying to base it on the things i read from the other members, about growing habits, fruit taste, and general hardiness of the tree. im starting to lean towards the dwarfs, but there are a few of the " larger trees" that i just have to have! so any info would be appriciated. the only problems i forsee is when i move back home and i wonder how many trips i have to make with 20 ft. nana trees and the biggest size 18 wheeler i can possibly get my hands on. :0519:...or...:nanerwaveytrain:

About Lacatan. I remember from some source that Lacatan was once, or may still be, one of the bananas of commerce. Chiquita supplied them to grocery stores in the USA.

Benny said that Lacatan was the best flavoured banana he had tasted - might have to order that in the spring! decisions! decisions! so many nanas, so little time!

I kid you not!
The best are the bigger ones. The color of the meat is almost pale red and the peels are not yellowish but more so on the bright darker yellow. If the fruit is ripened on the tree the meat is almost hard but when you peel the peelings you will smell the sweet aroma unique to the lacatan. And the taste is really out of this world. So far I have not tasted anything better and I traveled many places before. But then again taste is relative to each person.

I will wait until the new year. The postal system will be in tatters here for a while because of all the flooding, and soon places will be running out of diesel. The electricity has been off since 4pm Tuesday and we are running on our generator - luckily we have 100 gallons of diesel which will last us about 20 days. Besides I want a small pup as carriage is so expensive.

Let me know where you find one please.
