View Full Version : The weather is not normal here! Climate Changing?

My Bananas that I dug up and potted look terrible. This fall the weather has been hot in the day time and since the days are shorter it gets too cool at nights when the humidity is low the temperatures get lower at night (mid 40's f - it even got frosty on the cars a couple times so far this fall ). The green house is too hot when the day time out side temps are over 85 Degrees F(120 plus inside inadequate ventilation system with the shade cloth off for winter) and the short days and low humidity and high winds are making things really look bad. The ones that were too big to dig up are wind whipped but the bunches seem to be plumping on the ones that started blooming in September and I am optimistic that they will ripen especially if the below weather forecast remain true. I am going to have to re think my strategy about over wintering it is just too much trouble to keep moving big pots The ones that I have watered and did not dig are still growing and sending up pups but are showing the effects of not enough light yellowing leaves I cannot afford supplemental lighting to keep them all going properly so most will just have to look bad. On a bright spot the below fore cast looks like next year will be another great growing season here but could be indications of climate change and of my area becoming a more desert like - It makes me sad to have so many pots of bad looking bananas but if I can keep them alive till spring I know they will come out of it - but it is real hard to make them go semi dormant in these temperatures - Philip

Philip, I am right there with ya buddy.... I wish I hadn't even dug my plants yet as I have only had one wimpy freeze here so far! I have moved my potted ones back outside for the next couple of weeks at least.

Best of luck with the warm winter,

James

There are several factors at work making this season different than others, but I would agree that the climate is definitely changing, at least globally speaking anyway. Hopefully we can find a way to stabilize weather patterns without the ice caps in place.

Good point Mitchel on stabilizing w/o the ice caps... did you watch that show on The History Channel about glaciers melting? Good show... very enlightening.

Our weather has done this for as long as I can remember where I am located. It routinely goes from warm to cold in November and December.

The warming they claim is less than 1 F, and the temperature data we have is not that accurate so I am not sure how they came up with that number.

They also said that we would have more hurricanes than ever before and they would be more intense than ever before the last two years, but that never happened. Every generation has to have dooms day nearby, I guess it makes life more exciting.

What is life with out excitement :D

While we do lack consistent temp change data there is no denying that we are losing glaciers at a phenomenal rate and that the oceans have risen and are rising constantly, and are warming (it takes a lot of energy, BTU's, to raise the overal temp of the ocean 1 deg F) ... while I don't think it is the end of the world, it could be a problem if we don't adapt and overcome. With the new ocean temp sensors in place we should be able to get better data in the coming years to be able to more accurately predict how it will affect global climate overall.

Even in my short time on the face of this planet (I am from Mars originally :D) I have noticed differences in local climate over the years that are not consistent with the norms... whether that has anything to do with GW or not I don't know but it is abnormal.

I like this discussion!

James

I saw a show the other day where I learned a lot about sun spots and Galileo's discoveries involving them...
here's a link I just dug up with some good reading, something everyone concerned with global warming should know about as well, fwiw... http://www.gsfc.nasa.gov/topstory/20011207iceage.html

Hey James ,
I too am originally from Mars and my wife has a book that proves it ! Apparently, she's of venusian descent (according to the book) . I told her to just be glad that she found a good, decent, hardworking ,and handsome martian and throw the analyses out the window . Her reply : Perhaps we should read on ! :aliennaner: :2725:
Actually the situation (if you will ) has opened a new trade route in the far North. I saw a documentary concerning the ice caps, norwegian fishing industry , international commerce..... It was indicative of the drastic changes our environment is experiencing and future generations will endure . Blame was shelled out to automobiles , ploughing (which releases many tons of carbon from the soil and green advocates suggest "no till farming"as a viable means of control...I agree) , natural processes , and naturally occurring solar flares. It , of course, was far more detailed than that but I can't remember . It could be that the aspertame in my diet beverage has finally warped my brain or,perhaps, the aluminum foil I put on the grill has taken its toll but if and when you see this program you will understand my point that there is ,at least ,something going on .
I would love to go along with the short term cyclical theorem as I find everything else to be non conclusive but ,darnit, I don't want to be the middle aged guy who asks "remember that year when we all wore short pants to Christmas dinner?" . (BTW..it was about 20 years ago )

Pete, I darn near shot Dr. Pepper out of my nose reading your post (which isn't such a neat trick when sitting in front of electronics).

Anyway, I agree I just can't seem to go along with the short term cyclical theory either I am not saying I am right, but I believe humans and spontaneous natural occurances have a huge part in the way our global climate is changing.

I want to see that show... what channel was it on?

I'm not sure as to what channel it was on(CRS) . Maybe DOC,NGEO,DISC,TLC... I watch too much t.v. and have rechargable batteries in the remote .
The major point that [the program] illustrated was that the large icebreaker vessels were no longer an essential part of intercoastal trade (in this particular region)because ships could now traverse the expanse with ease . From what I understand (or remember)the U.S.,Russia,Canada and several other countries are now staking their claims to this otherwise virtually useless waterway .

11-13-2007, 04:23 AM
Well I guess I will have to scrounge for it then!!! It shouldn't be hard to find though... I just got a program that allows me to watch almost any channel's episodes after their initial broadcast... very neat software to have.

Well, living in Norway, I haven't noticed anything special around here. Polar regions are where you are supposed to see climatic change first, right? We haven't been unusually warm, not unusually cold, and the fish in the sea that used to be there are there. Except for the cod offcourse, wich has been overfished for a century.
So far we just have our fair share of climate-freaks, enjoying every moment as they tell the sceptics that they are less intelligent and we're all going to die.
The global-warming issue is approaching total-thinking.
I tend to double and tripple-check issues that are politically incorrect. Total thinking, as what happened in germany during WW2 is a reminder and reason to avoid total thinking.
Personally, I don't panic untill i see some real, rockhard evindence of global warming. I know, by then it will be too late. So I am still all for funding environmentally sound projects, fuels, food-production, and energy.

But I think, atleast here in Norway, many people are panicing and few people are coming up with solutions. But there is a research-centre here in Bergen that have come a very long way in cellulosic-ethanol research. They claim to be able to produce bioethanol from used wood and paper, economically! Offcourse, the technology will not be sold cheaply, some rich guy wants to get more rich. They will be starting up a test-factory soon. It was in the paper a few months ago, now everybody has forgotten and local politicians propose car-free saturdays, rushhour taxes, and other obstacles that make everyday family life harder.

But back to bananas; Just imagine all those pseudostems powering our veichles.... :2215:

The reason I mentioned it was that, in the documentary , there were interviews with fishermen and freightmen to whom the trade route may impact. There is a program "Naked Science" on National Geographic tommorow @4:00 pm central which may have been the one i saw .
I hope that it is the one because it was very interesting and I can barely remember it.
I have seen the facility you mentioned ,perhaps on the same program , and remember wanting to pm you to see if you were near it or had heard of it .

Was that show titled "A Global Warning" ?
I just wached it on The History Channel and it airs again at 12:00 am central (in two hours).
Very informative .

I live in Tempe, AZ next to the airport which is the hottest part of the city. Last winter only had 2 nights under 32 deg f. today the temps are going to be in the high 80s with a low in the 60s. It has been the warmest nov. That I can remember and my plants love it. So I am all for global warming in the winter.

Global warming is a natural part of the earth’s climate and we are only helping it along to another ice age. I also watch too much info TV. The science channel has had some good shows on lately on this subject.

valerie@flower

Yesterday where I live was the hottest in the nation 95 degrees, not normal for this time of year. There are a lot of factors to the climate changes everywhere. Some places have no difference which could be due to the altitude (molecules move slower in colder, thinner air). Some are having cycle weather patterns. Some are seeing drought where there was no problem before. Low to sea level towns along the coast are having flooding due to the rising ocean, from more rapid evaporation in the atmosphere. A fresh water shortage is due to limited snow melting to make rivers and streams flow (the Great Lakes area will not have this problem), now we have water cops. Flooding from rain pour and hurricanes in places that never had it before. Global warming is a fact and a ice age is not going to happen. The earth is slowly gravitating towards the sun with no ozone protection in some places. The earths core is getting hotter too causing plates to shift (earthquakes and volcanos erupting). The rapid evaporation from the heat should be controlled first with our natural atmosphere gasses. So keep on planting I figure since pure carbon monoxide is 3% lighter than air.:2756:

modenacart

Where are the areas that are having hurricanes and flooding that have never had it before? The last two years we have had very few hurricanes.

Also, any water that is floating that melts does nothing to the sea levels because the weight has not changes and something only displaces its weight when in water. More rapid evaporation would cause the levels of the ocean to lower and would cause more rain inland. Also, more rapid evaporation would cause a cooling effect. To phase change it takes a massive amount of energy and that engery would be absorbed from the air causing the ambient air temperatures to lower.

Also where are the coast lines that are below water now?

The ozone argument is a joke, they have seen it swell and grow ever since they have been looking at it.

Droughts come in cycles also. Since we have not been measuring weather and weather patterns very accuratly long at all its a very big strech to say any of these things are facts. Where are the areas that are having droughts that have never had them before?

The earths core and rapidly shifting plates are a new one to me. How are they measuring the core temperatures of the earth?

When they first started the gobal warming arugments they said it would cause very hot summers and very cold winters. That was suppose to be a fact then, but I guess they backed away from that.

What is going to come from gobal warming is going to be more taxes. They are doing gobal servays to see if people would be willing to pay more taxes to combat gobal warming and its shocking to see that people are will to pay it.

Well, i can only speak for my country. The greatest part of Holland is below
sea-level. We have to raise the dikes because the sea-level is rising, thats
for sure.
Now, what causes the Global temperature rising, i don't know. It has happened before here around 1600 that there were decades of very warm winters. That's known because there were a lot of stories about certain flowering plants in wintertime wich should not flower at all in the winter.
Also logbooks from sailors confirm this.

I am not much worried about it, it will have his advantages and disadvantages.

OK gotta chip in again...

Our global climate IS changing and will continually change whether or not humans have anything to do with it. This is a proven fact. Some regions my see greater changes than others. Ocean temperature and levels HAVE and ARE rising , yet another fact. Is it gonna devestate humans in our lifetime.... probably not (might affect some wetland species). Is Oklahoma gonna be considered tropical by the time I am 50?... again I am pretty sure the answer is no.

Global warming/climate change (whatever you want to refer to it as) should definately NOT be ignored and we should do everything we can to preserve our enviroment. If the earth is going to change by itself then fine but we should do everything we can to NOT be a part of the change. It is everyones responsibility to live in harmony with our planet, and if we don't then we are just a plague on this planet and that is not what I want to be known for.

History channel and others like it do make it seem to be a doom and gloom issue as well as radical earth savers... but that is how they get their ratings and their media attention respectively. Who knows maybe later on in the future it could be a doom and gloom issue but no matter what we should strive to make the world a better place when we have the opportunity to.

just my 4 cents :D

Modenacart did you get your information from the Taliban?

How did you know.

Everyone should check their record highs in their areas. We are still a good 10 degrees below ours.

I am very much against pollution. I keep the air at only 78 F in the summer, at 72 in the winter. I turn off my lights when I leave a room, car pool to work and compost everything I can. If the so called weather change is not due to people, then we should not do anything about it. Every time people try to fix something in nature, they just screw it up.

I think its amazing they can claim they know so much about something that has only been studied for a short period of time with data that does not have the resolution they are claiming the change is in. The model tolerances they claim are beyond ridiculous. I use to run a thermo lab in collage and we did not get accuracy within 1 degree with any of the labs we ran and we ran very basic labs when we predicted temperatures. No way are they modeling weather to the accuracy claimed. If that was the case, the weather man would never be wrong.

Modenacart, I maybe reading your posts wrong but I am afraid you are getting heated over this discussion and I just wanted to let you know I try to keep my posts light hearted and fun for everyone... I respect your point of view on this situation and you seem to have very good information.

I would probably gotten a bit heated too though if someone indicated that I was meteorologically affiliated with a terrorist organization. :D

On that note.... I wasn't saying we should try to reverse the earths natural changes just live as harmoniously as possible w/ the planet so that WE (humans) are having as little adverse effects on our world as possible.

Which I don't think anyone here would say that they advocate pouring bleach in streams or anything like that and I am sure we all have given up something in order to preserve our enviroment, I don't think any one is questioning your care for the enviroment (I know for sure that I'm not).

I think between me and you modenacart we can create a banana powered car :2789: !!!

I want to thank every one for all the interesting comments I really do not know what is happening in the big picture but it appears that the moderate La Nina weather pattern that we are into now here in this part of the country will make for a excellent growing season next year in Texas - another mild winter and summer; so I have put a lot more in the green house to over winter this year and am planning a on a large yard sale of plants next spring I have close to a hundred in the green house now. I have dug all the bananas I really have room for and have ran out of pots for more. The next thing to dig is some Bamboo to pot up but that is really hard work running bamboos rhizomes are hard to cut and dig I can probably dig and pot 5- 5 gallon pots of each specie this year with out hurting my bamboo forest it usually sells pretty well when I have a yard sale. Again thank everyone! - Philip- posted some new pictures today in my galley
