I have just found this forum and can't wait to get reading ... have to attend to the children and do some chores first though! :waving:

Our banana 'tree' is in a sorry state at present, we have had no idea how to look after it (neither did the previous owners I think) so it is a mass of dried and torn leaves and is probably 1-2 metres in diameter with stems firmly packed up against each other. It is spring here in New Zealand so I hope after reading up on how to care for it there will still be time for it to fruit. Here's hoping anyway.

Welcome aboard Sue!

Post a thread in the Main Banana Discussion when you get back from your chores so we can keep up with your progress!

Clean out those old leaves, maybe clear out a few of the pups, and be sure to add plenty of nutrients to the remaining mat.

Hope you enjoy the site!

but if you have pics, we all like pics:)

Thanks for the welcome. Pictures, hmmmmm, dunno. I've avoided having to go to the palava of putting pictures on forums until now ... I can see the help it would be though. Mmmmm.

After receiving some good advice from some members on the chatroom I've watered and fertilised my banana plants every second day and have been rewarded with 10 babies (is the correct name pups?) so far! Woohoo!!

How big should they be before I attempt to separate them?

I had also stripped all the old leaves from the plants. I lost two of them when my son threw himself in the middle of them and they snapped ... grrrrr. Maybe I had stripped them a little too much.

Thanks for the advice! I wonder if they will fruit this year?????
