TS Noel came through here yesterday without much warning and caused much loss of life (20 dead and 30 missing) and trashed the farms too. We went across the mountains to Santiago today by the only road open to traffic and there was quite a bit of distruction - trees down and bananas flattened. Luckily mine are still small enough to shelter behind the walls and the bigger ones are just shredded. The commercial operations have suffered and about 30% of the crop has been destroyed in the area we went through - further south it will be worse.

Thanks for your concern - here in the north we usually escape the worst of the weather - down south the flooding is very bad and the capital Santo Domingo is cut off with many bridges washed out. The navy is ferrying aid to isolated towns - crops badly affected too but worst of all is the loss of life. Noel strengthened so quickly that there was no time to warn people in the countryside.

Looking on the bright side however, the nanas are slurping up the rain and I expect great things shortly (I live in hope!).

Carol, glad your safe. Our prayers are with those that didn't have it so well.

My friend lives in Portsmouth, Dominica and she was worried since Wilma came this same week last year.
