A member of a rarefruit group I belong to posted this question and I thought she could be well-served with advice here. Since I have not read about such a problem, I thought I'd like to know about it myself. She is from Naples, FL.

I have one large clump of bananas that has been thriving and fruiting
well for the past several years. I wish I could remember the variety name.

At any rate, this year, as soon as a stalk flowers and sets small
fruit, the stem rots and dies. This happens only to fruiting stalks.
The others are fine and healthy. It has happened repeatedly over this
summer.

It is not borers. I have had those before. It seems to rot near the
middle of the stalk and then fall over and the whole thing rots away.

Any comments or suggestions would be really appreciated.

Generally, rot only hapens as a result of a combination of cold and water (rain), and usually only occurs in the winter months.

What may be happening is that the plants that are flowering lack enough vigor (under-fertilized) to maintain the health of the plant after the energy draining process of flowering, and what looks like rotting is really dying and decay, which hapens to all stalks at some point after flowering, but usually after harvesting the fruit.

Thanks Jon. I may try to work out a trip to come visit you in about a month with a friend. Just a "head's up" in case I forget to contact you before the last minute! ;)
