View Full Version : A problem with my baby Ae Ae

Don't confuse this with my other thread posted on Ae Ae growth tonight.

I got this Ae Ae as a very small pup a couple of months ago and it had a couple of nubs showing on the corm, but no roots. It was a sword pup and lost its leaves and then I performed surgery since the next couple of leaves got hung up trying to emerge. Then, last week, things looked much better and a leaf started to emerge. On the downside, it looked to be all green. To make matters worse, this morning I got some black spot on part of the leaf and tonight it looks much worse.

I've been careful with the water, keeping it mostly on the dry side, but I did water it slightly just before taking this photo. Maybe I need more water, but I doubt that is the problem, I'm tempted to dig it up and see what's going on below. Maybe it's an insect problem? I don't see any, though.

Sorry for the focus point being too low, but you get the idea. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Is the leaf with the black spot the one you did the surgery on? If so then that leaf is not black spot just bruised from the surgery. The stem looks like it is in good shape. If you dig up the plant to see how the roots are doing you might put the plant into shock. You might want to just poke around at the top roots very carefully. If they are not black or dark brown then all is OK. Another question for you, I see some white spots on the big leaf is that from the camera? I hope this baby makes it.:bebe:

No, that leaf did not have surgery on it nor was it bruised from the surgery. I thought my comments were clear, but I guess not. This leaf emerged last week, well after the surgery.

Harvey , too me the soil looks a bit heavy , perhaps it's too moist. New single leaves cannot handle excessive moisture , it looks like water damage to me. I'm no expert but if that kind of thing has happened to me I put it down to moisture. I'd unpot it and have a look at the roots for signs of rot and excess moisture. Then repot with a bunch of perlite , this should get it to the next leaf then the problems should be over. It's the trouble with these small divisions and rootless divisions , they drive me nuts. In future before I send out a division I'm going to root it and make sure it's a viable plant before it hits the Post . Divisions I make here for myself seem to have few problems because they are separated and potted within a few minutes and recover and start growing in a week instead of a month or three.

Thanks, Steve. I did add perlite to a potting mix that had perlite in it already and quite a bit of compost. It seems fairly "fluffy" and, as I wrote, I've been keeping it on the dry side. Another friend suggests that I probably should have held off on the fertilizer, even though it got very little.
