View Full Version : Dwarf and Super Dwarf?

I got these plants from my mother-in-law. The large one in the center grew from the original (which she gave me a while ago and is now dead), the smaller one to its left is its pup, and the plant on the right is a different variety that she just gave me (shown below also). The first two were separated several months ago; the last was just separated yesterday from its parent, along with two slightly smaller pups, none of which are in the photos. The larger plants were both grown exclusively indoors, and the smallest plant almost exclusively outdoors (until now).

I suspect that the larger two are Dwarf Cavendish and the smallest is Super Dwarf Cavendish. Does anyone care to confirm, or to correct me? And please pardon my messy room.

Maybe some more information will evoke a reply.

To give a sense of scale and age, the largest Musa in the top photo is about one year old, give or take a couple months (I haven't been counting). The longest leaf of that plant (the one that almost looks like it's touching the right-hand Musa) is roughly 2' long from where it meets the pseudostem. I don't really remember how old the left-hand Musa is, but I'll venture a guess of six months or so. The right-hand Musa is a few months old.

The right-hand Musa is almost certainly a Super Dwarf, but I have doubts about the other two. I identified them as Dwarf Cavendish by browsing many photographs online, but it's difficult to know if I'm right. Furthermore, the plant's growth makes me believe it may not be DC because it's so small after a year has already passed. I figure this could be due to its being indoors, but I don't have enough experience with Musa to judge.

If anyone here could give even a guess, it would be helpful. I'm concerned that if the larger two are DC, I won't be able to care for them as they get larger. I don't picture 6–8' Musa doing so well in an apartment with ~9' ceilings.
