any such thing? Is there an edible red out there that has cold tolerance? Last year I purchased a D. Jamaican red and have been growing it in a 15gal pot. It has not been real happy, so next spring it is going into the ground, do or die. More than likely die, the following winter. I would enjoy the color in my yard, not to mention the red fruits, anything out there? If not, million dollar idea here (I get 5% and a pup).:doggyandnaner:

thanks,

The reds are more sensitive to cold then the others. I have been able to keep pups in 15 gal containers but they just sit there and don't grow much until they get in the ground.

you need specify what degree of cold tolerance you are looking for, since all hardiness is relative anyways.

How about cold hardiness to zone 8. That would be great.

is there anything red similar in cold tolerance to Misi Luki CA gold, etc. That would be outstanding to find. Hmmmm if only there was someone living in Hawaii, doing work w/bananas, that was part of this forum, needing a project for a thesis?

just dreaming for now,

:2738: Hi Ethan.

There is a Cold Hardy sweet edible banana that does just fine in zone 8. You can get the information about it and order the plants at this web site link HOOKED ON PALMS (http://www.hookedonpalms.com/hardybananas/helenshybridbanana.html). I have listied some information about it below.

HELEN'S HYBRID BANANA Chini Champa – Darjeeling Cold-tolerant, edible banana. Helen's Hybrid banana is a cross between two varieties of high altitude bananas from the foothills of the Himalayas in the Sikkim region of India. One variety, the Chini Champa, is used as food and the other is a wild type usually referred to as the Darjeeling Banana. The report is that Helen's Hybrid could possibly be the closest thing to a cold-tolerant, edible banana that has been developed. The fruit is claimed to be sweet, yet have seeds.
