Musa velutina makes a nice grove quickly. This spring I started with one sprouted seed of Randy's (that was 1.5 feet when I planted it in March) along with a few corms that I received in the mail. Here's the grove today! I like the slender leaves compared to musa basjoo. I think this banana grows to the perfect height and is wonderful for smaller yards.

Progress of the fruit. They seem to be getting very plump.

I know when I harvested mine last year, I could expect to get at least 100 or so seeds per... Now, I harvested and shipped out well over 6000 seeds last year, so you do the math. I will not be doing quite that many this year even if I wanted to. I actually had access to an ultra sonic bath last fall, and it did really well with lab sand added in the mix. I don't know if I will have access to it again this year...

Randy, my velutina bananas are starting to split open now (the same bananas as in my avatar). They are very fat and plump. I'll have to monitor them and get a pic!

Normally, it takes two years to get them from seed to fruiting. I didn't realize you got the to fruit for you the first year from seed, Austin. That is amazing. I know most grown from seed only produce nice foliage and the second year is when they usually produce fruit...

Looking back at the pics, it may actually be closer to 10 months. It looks like the seed germinated during the winter. I kept it inside near an east window and then planted it out in the garden in late March. It started flowering in early July. This plant bloomed when it was very short compared to my other velutinas that flowered this year.

Hey Austin,
The first pic is dated 1/0/08, and the plant looks quite a bit larger than 2 months old. Are you sure the plant in the first pic didn't sprout at least six months earlier? Whatever the case, your second pic is a very nice looking plant. Thanks again for the info...

Thanks, Randy, you may be right. I guess that's what happens when you don't write things down! Sorry for the misinformation, guys. I really thought it sprouted in the winter. :)
