My husband (kenboy, also just signed up here) and I are new to bananas here in the Piney Woods of NE Texas. We have been given banana plants over the past couple of years and are learning how to care for them here. Ken is over the moon about his big, blooming banana this year and I am glad we found this place!

Welcome!
They were given to you by friends or neighbors or what?

Thanks for the welcome!

The bananas we have are (I think) all the same thing, they have come to us thru swaps and the generosity of others, most of whom live south of us in zone 9. We were not sure how to overwinter them, we left one or 2 in the ground and noticed they are slower to come back in the spring, Ken dug a couple of them last year and put them in feed sacks and stored them in the unheated brooder house (we raise peafowl as well). They came along quickly as soon as we planted them out again. One plant he left in the ground and put a round cage around and filled it with dry leaves, then he put another (smaller in diameter) round cage on that and filled it with leaves. It looked like a strange two-tier wedding cake all winter. That banana has produced several large pups, it has not shown any signs of wanting to bloom. It's pretty good sized, maybe 12 feet or so?
