I'd like 3, but not til about March... I always end up killing small TC plants in the winter. In spring it's a different story and they take off well. Maybe if I put them in with the Velutina and other Musa seeds I'll be trying to germinate, they might make it...

Thanks!

There are a few different forms of 'ele 'ele, one I saw along the Hana Highway on Maui had pure black petioles and pseudostems (as far as I could tell). I couldn't really get close enough to get good pictures, but this is what I saw.

There are probably alot of different Musa's that fit the description, and requirements for being called Musa balbisiana because it is one of the main ancestors of alot of present day bananas.
Musa balbisiana is a wild species, although many edibles have M. balbisiana "blood" in them, they are not M. balbisiana themselves. M. balbisiana is however naturally variable as well as heavily cultivated for various purposes, so there are many different varieties of M. balbisiana, they are all similar enough though to be identified as the same basic species.

Thanks now you got me wondering about another questions. If it's an ancestor, does it get seeds?
:2738:
If this plant is true to its name, then yes it will have seeds if pollinated. If its not pollinated, it will just not make any fruit.

If I missed leaving anyone feedback please let me know! It's hard to match real names with usernames sometimes and so if I didn't leave you feedback and you ordered these, just leave me feedback and I will reciprocate!
This was a lot of fun and a whirlwind actually but they are all gone and I hope to do it again sometime. The group order was mainly an experiment but it worked and I look forward to bringing new rare bananas to you guys in the future. There will be many more :) Hopefully all in the future will be as beautiful if not more than the Black Thai! Hard to compare though, each type of banana plant has its own wonderful attributes.

I am kind of new here, but I got one of these beauties (thank you much if I didn't already say that), and my question (if it is already here somewhere forgive me because I am still wading through all the posts) is what is the best way to increase your varieties? I looked at ordering tissue cultures, get a whole lot of one variety (might be fun as I have a new greenhouse to play with), but really looking for the best source for different banana plants. There is always Ebay I know, but I tend to have bad experiences with things I order from Ebay, sometimes hard to get what I paid for, sometimes not exactly what I think it should be). So what do you do? Tissue culture, just buy one at a time till you get them all?

Thats what I did, as well as trade and got some for free or just shipping. I don't know of any way to just get them all besides the old fashioned method.

That's how I started, and then I also started trading my pups for varieties I didn't have. I cut 12 pups today (5 different varieties), planted a few for backup, and have 5 for sale or trades.

I'm trying to trade up to an AeAE...Kinda like the One Red Paperclip (http://oneredpaperclip.blogspot.com/)

Has anyone got an AeAe pup and want to trade one? PM me please.

See it's just that easy! :woohoonaner:

Ok on that note, anyone who has any extras that won't break the bank, will buy them (not bum them) and give them a good home to boot. :) So you are saying you all mostly buy them from people here on this message board? I am not sure what is my best source. They are plentiful on Ebay but I tend to get burned when I fool with Ebay. Congrats on the black pup, isn't it exciting when they do that? :jump:
