I forget what it's called but it's finally making fruit! I'll update the pictures as it grows.

How long is it taking you from planting to fruit? It takes me about 3 years in NC.

momoese

It's taking about the same time as Bananas. 2yrs give or take. This one was planted at the same time as the other variety that I already ate a while back and it's just now starting to send up the fruit. It was partially uprooted a couple times from my dogs playing ball so that may have something to do with the longer time to fruit. All of my pineapple plants were slips that I bought on ebay.

Neat! I started mine from a pineapple I bought at the grocery store and it is starting to grow a bit and has grown quite an impressive root system in a short time.

Mine is from a store pineapple too. It shows a lot of growth at first then it takes forever to fruit. I have mine in pots, I could never grow them in the ground.

You just cut off all of the fruit and stick the top in some soil . I did this earlier this year and thought the thing was gone . My groundcover took it over . I pulled the stuff back last week to find the pineapple still alive .
Buzzwinder , you should be able to keep one potted just like all of your other bromeliads . Warn the kids , some can have nasty tips on the leaves .

Just hold the fruit firmly in one hand, and with your other hand, grab the crown by the base, (growth coming out of the top of fruit), and twist. Then peel back the bottom leaves(about 1/4 to 1/2 inch) and let it sit a day or two before planting. When choosing a pineapple, try to find one with a crown thats not too beat up.

Just to add to Nanaman's post... an application of fungicide and root stimulator wouldn't hurt, if you don't have any then that is ok too but you run a greater risk of rot with out the fungicide. The root stimulator (growth hormone) just gives it a little extra 'oomph' to get established.

Just make sure there is no fruit left on the bottom after peeling the lower leaves off. If so trim with a knife. I pull enough leaves off so that it makes the nub on the bottom about an inch long, then let it sit on top of the fridge for 2-3 days before potting in a 50/50 mix of perlite and planting compost. I'll post a picture of the crown from the fruit I harvested that's doing very well now!

You don't have to wait for seasonal fruit, you can purchase slips on line. Here's a link:http://cgi.ebay.com/PINEAPPLE-PLANT-Kona-Sugarloaf-SP_W0QQitemZ190148739109QQihZ009QQcategoryZ25463QQssPageNameZWDV WQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

And from what I understand the slips will fruit faster then a crown or a sucker although my original plant suckered long before it grew slips so it's almost full grown allready!

The plant that's flowering now has no slips or suckers..... Waaaa

I have had better luck starting mine in water. Prepare by twisting off the top, removing the lower leaves and cutting off a little of the bottom to make sure you removed all the fruit. Then I put the bottom part that I removed the leaves from in warm water and put it in indirect sun. I change the water daily and in about two weeks you should see some nice roots growing. They will be a white color. The middle might start to rot on you. Don't worry, just remove the rotted parts. If you don't see roots in a couple of weeks it most likely died.

Thank You Pete, Brian, James and Mitchel for the Great pointers, I have got to try this, The kids will get a real charge out of it not to mention my wife and myself, I'm gonna do alittle more research on the topic ( I know absolutly nothing about pineapples other than taste, and what you guys just informed me of ) any ideas on a place to get more onfo on the subject? Thanks:abajo:

I know absolutly nothing about pineapples other than taste Just wait til you taste one that you pick ripe off the plant!! The thing with pineapples is that they do not ripen anymore once picked and you'll never see a fully ripened fruit in the store.

Just do a google search on growing pineapples, there's tons of info out there!

I can't stress enough how good a ripe, homegrown pineapple tastes. Most people I know are not too keen on pineapples, because they have never tasted a ripe one! Also, Sugarloaf, Natal Queen, and Pernambuco are much better tasting than the standard Smooth Cayenne commercial varieties found in grocery stores! IMHO. There is one caveat though, it is reported that pineapples need full sun, and warm to hot humid conditions to produce optimum fruit sweetness and flavor.

Last winter here in Cali we had some serious frosty nights from an Arctic blast. During that time I built a make shift green house over them with sticks and plastic sheeting. The wall the pineapples are planted in a corner against is the south/east facing wall of my garage which has tons of lighting inside so I kept the lights on all night to help keep that south facing wall warm. I also added the black lava rocks and a couple big stones to trap some warmth in the daytime from the sun. The other wall they are against is the greenhouse/storage space that has glass windows on the Pineapple's side so that helped to transfer some warmth for them too. This year I'm going to add X-Mas lights around the plants and leave the garage lights off to save electricity.

I have heard they can be over wintered indoor in a bright window with constant sprayings of water but I've never tried it.

I grow mine in pots and have brought them in for the winter without any problems. They grow really slow then, but I expected that.

you can also grow pineapple from seeds.. though pineapples from Hawaii will not have seeds
as they do not have humming birds to pollinate the flowers..
Here is a pic of a seed still in the fruit... the brown speck just below the straw..
http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/2567/120405167lv.jpg

Here is one of the seedlings..
http://img479.imageshack.us/img479/1227/12040539mk.jpg

The mini greenhouse I grew the seeds in..
http://img78.imageshack.us/img78/6408/11806pineapples16hy.jpg

I lost LOTS of the seedlings to cold..
they grew to this big before I missed watering them and they died...
http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/4673/pineappleseedling526063lv.jpg

I can not say how long from seed to fruit as my babies died..
I was told that the resulting fruit would be hybrids and not taste like the fruit that I got the seed from..

Just another idea for you..

momoese,
very beautiful pictures!! Congrats!!!!

Hey Gina, I saw this thread before, on another forum. I found a couple seeds in commercial pineapples and sprouted one just to get the experience. I didn't let it grow though, I don't want to grow commercial varieties. But I'm hoping that my Natals, Sugerloafs, and Pernambucos will cross pollinate, and give me a new hybrid to try. Thanks for the pictures, and informative article!

Well my dogs got a lttle carried away playing ball the other day and crashed into the plant breaking about half the root system off. As of now it seems to be stunted. It has finally started to send some slips though!
