Hi All!!

Can anyone help me? I bought this as a Praying Hands from a plant sale at Fairchild years ago. It has been in the ground for 5-6 years and has never bloomed. Mostly because it gets too cold in the winter and rots. This year the 3 tall plants made it thru the winter, so it should be ready to flower.

My question is about the black color on the trunks, (none on the leaves). The pics that I see on this site don't show the black. :0520: Does that mean it isn't a PH? Or does it mean something else. It isn't rot(though it appears bumpy in the pic, it is only a color change). Can anyone help me?

It's not Praying Hands, the black coloration is very normal on bananas, but unfortunatly not on Praying Hands which has an all green pseudostem. The leaf bases (at the junction with the petiole) suggest it is something either in the AAA or AAB groups (Praying Hands is in the ABB, so your plant is likely something completely different), which is a lot of different plants. So for a final ID, you will need to wait for it to flower and post more pictures here when it does so.

Margie,

The black is something caused by environmental factors, probably shade and coolness. Some, such as the Cavendishes and Goldfinger seem to have it more often. I really don't see it on my PH. On the bright side, when it fruits, PH is unmistakeable, so at some point you will remove all doubt.

Oh, Bummer!!!!

Pitangadiego, there is no cool in Florida this time of year! Days in the High 90's and nights in the mid70's to 80's and very humid (and unseasonably dry).

And Gabe, thanks for the news. But I don't know enough to know about the A and B stuff...where can I learn more about that?
