In Northern California we have a hardware chain called Orchard Supply Hardware (aka OSH) and their stores usually have fairly good nursery departments. Today in Stockton, CA I noticed these little bananas but the puts did not have anything on them to even say they were bananas. They were beling sold as "foliage plant $17.97". Any thoughts?

Sorry, the photo isn't the best, it was taken with my Treo phone though I did do some processing in Photoshop to help it out.

True Gabe, possibly Little Prince? Not Truly Tiny at all. My Truly Tiny looks just like a regular Cavendish(of course smaller), not all scrunched up like in this picture.

Thanks, Gabe. I've been on so much of a buying binge lately (17 cultivars in 3 weeks) that my head is spinning and I'm losing track. Just so happens a SDC is one of those 17, but it's much smaller right now.

Thanks,

Harvey

Part of banana ID is knowing whats realistically available, SDC is a very common banana plant, for these unnamed, unlabled, grocery-store-floral-shop type mystery bananas, they are almost always either DC or SDC, they are very common plants. You can tell it is a cavendish just knowing what a cavendish looks like. You can tell tell its SDC because of its compact stature, and you can by sure its not Little Prince because 1) little prince is not a very common plant (although popular in our little niche market, its not at the scale of DC and SDC), and 2) little prince is even more compact, a full size plant in my experience being about the size of the pups on the plants in this picture.

Although you really can't be 100% sure until flowering, I still go with SDC.

Hey, Kylie! Now I see why you're always so happy all the time...carrying around that bottle with you as you garden!! Just kidding!

Our local Home Depot has had about 30 'Little Prince' potted in some nice little round bowls. So far, I've resisted buying one as I have several SDC and a nice Hi Color Mini. Plus my wife frowned at me awfully hard when I showed them to her!

Its nice to see they are becoming more easily available. Still though, can you see the difference? Little Prince is still more compact at most stages of growth is much smaller than SDC (in my experience).
