While taking pictures today I noticed that one pup in my clump of Enano Gigante has yellow markings on almost all of it's leaves. I was wondering if this particular pup just happened to be variegated, or if it could have a disease. None of the others in the clump are affected.

Hey, Joe (where you goin' with that gun in your hand)...sorry, channeling a little Hendrix there!

I was admiring those pics earlier today and I just thought it was a var. banana. It doesn't look diseased to me either. Maybe it'll stay stable for you. If it does and you get any extra pups I'd sure like to trade you for one.

Later,

Hard to say for sure, Joe, but I would guess variegated (and it is just that: A guess!). Whatever the verdict, nice-looking plant!

How long will it be before someone tells you it's diseased and to mail it to them immediately so they can dispose of it properly for you...

Looks like its variegated then! The clump its in is huge, and very likely will not be able to be overwintered :( If this turns out to be the case I will separate it for sure, since it is a good size to be grown indoors.

I'll keep you all updated!

I have one problem with the variegation, it's not lineal like all of the other variegated bananas. It sort of meanders over the leaf. Be on the safe side and don't put it close to other bananas. I have known some horticulturist that think all variegation stems from virus.

Thanks Jordan!

It is currently a newish pup in a clump of many bananas of all different ages and sizes, none of which have any of the markings on the leaves. My guess is that if it is a virus, it would effect, or at least be carried by others in the clump since they're all probably on one huge corm?

When I separate it for the winter I'll definitely keep it away from the others, until I know for sure!

I wouldn't be a person with any basis to argue with a horticulturalist about variegation and viruses, but my guess would be its a genetic defect, maybe like the way some animals are randomly born albino! (OK, waaay out of my depth now, gonna have to quit!)

The newest leaf will be open in a week or so, I'll post a picture!

I am very interested in seeing what the next leaf holds as far as color goes.. I have a Passi now that is somewhat of a freak.. Totally different from the parent plant..
I look forward to seeing your photo's ..
