Is a high color mini dwarf cavendish (agristarts) considered an edible banana or an ornamental banana? I know it's pretty, but does it make an edible, seedless fruit?
Thanks for your help

Theoretically yes, but I have yet to see one actually flower. If it were to, it would most certainly be a seedless fruit being a Cavendish, but the plant still be considered ornamental only if it is not capable of actually producing fruit. It could just keep dieing and regenerating without ever flowering, or may produce a very weak bunch, or...it could produce lovely fruit, who knows, I don't, but they don't seem to be any sort of prolific flower producer.

What timing for this thread, mine is just opening a flower this week! The flower is big for the plant's size, and I expect to have a good size bunch. I received this plant as a 6 inch TC in a 4 inch pot on 10/25/06. The only complaint I have is the plant lost all red markings at about 1 1/2 foot. It is flowering at just under 3 feet. Here's a few pics.:

well there you have it, looks like it'll be a nice good bunch. I wonder if it will be vertical/horizontal like some normal SDC, keep posting pics.

Very impressive. That flower is huge. Lots of pineapples in the background. Nice.

Yea I cut the leaf off just below the flower to give it some room, but at present it seems to want to hang more horizontally. I'll take more pictures in a couple weeks.

Wow. I hope you get a bloom next year. Fertilize, Fertilize, Fertilize! I wonder if they will store well.
Hopefully better than Zebrina :ha:
Good Luck Brian! Sell pups one day?

Thanks for the response and the pictures! Wow that is one cool looking plant...Congratulations.
I got some "mini" from Sunshine horticulture, and they never did have any color to them like the high colors that I got from Agristarts. Those little suckers are really growing though (the two that I have left, anyway!)

Thanks for the kudos everyone! I know other members have said that it was difficult to get a flower on theirs, but this thing is one of the more vigorous plants I have grown. It was grown in a pot for 3/4 of it's life, but I got tired of it being blown over by storms. I think it would have fruited in the pot if I had any patience. South Fl. growers should have no problem getting this one to produce a bunch of fruit!
FYI, Home 'Crapo' Depot is selling 'High Color Mini' here in Florida in an 8" pot with other premium annuals for under $5.00. I got one from Tropiflora in the spring as a 4" pot and now its in a full 7g, great patio plant. Lost the red though. I have seen some fruiting here in Naples, just looks like smaller Dwf Cavendish.

I'm not sure why they split but I wasn't around much to see the fruit growth process!

Sorry it took so long, I'm out of town alot. I didn't remove any pups, but I never do any way. Everything in my yard seems to grow pretty fast, but the differences in our zones keeps us from comparing notes that would benefit either of us. hcm seem to grow, pup, and fruit at about the same pace as most other bananas in my yard. Hope that helps!

They split because at some point in their growth process they got a lot more water all at once - think a rainstorm - and the fruit grew faster than the skin. Happens down here all the time with the Oritos.
