View Full Version : Is it a good idea to cut back the p stem?
I found yet another mystery banana plant while out biking; fortunately she was very close to home because she's at least 10' tall and pretty heavy. Though she's definitely alive, she doesn't look very healthy; she was out for the trash guys. Her root ball is very small and she has only 2 very torn up leaves. With other rescue plants I've always the top way back in order to give the roots a chance to regroup. Should I cut her p stem back off? If so, how much do I leave? 5"?

I cut my cavendish all the way down for years and never had an issue. Going by the popularity I bet you found an orinoco.

Congrats on the find..
I have done both ways cut the pstem and just stuck it in the container intact.
I have also cut the stem off and left the plant still potted.
If the pstem is not damaged you could keep it intact.
Dealers choice on the cut height......it never seemed to matter in my case......some of the corms which I have received in the mail are cut pretty close to keep the weight down and fit in a smaller box.
On smash and grabs I will just trim off the leaves so it will fit in the car.

That was lying abandoned by the side of my road. Fair game? My dumpster diving skills are very rusty but I thought so. Yet, I checked up, down and all around before I snatched up my prize and calmly walked her 1/4 mile home. Calm? Nope. And feeling a little guilty. Someone very lovingly dug her up preserving all roots.
So for the 1st 1/8 mile I was watching for the cops. Last 1/8 mile I told myself that if they'd left it for a friend then it would have been in their driveway around the corner instead of outside their fence on the main road.
Having convinced myself when I arrived home that the people with mangoes and other plants in their nicely maintained, fenced yard had left it there in the hopes that someone would give their extra Musa a good home before it got trashed, I potted her up.
Every time I go out, I check their "trash" pile. Nothing good yet but who knows?

I know you have already made a wise decision....
But for giggles....you can cut it little shorter.
This one did not cry too much...
