Since it would be nice to be able to have a searchable tool to know what banana cultivars and species people are growing, aside from the maps in the wiki, we can now have members note in their profile what bananas they are growing!
If you're interested in learning more about a certain banana, you may now easily find out who else has it, and be able to easily contact those other members directly.

Check out the new profile field:
http://www.bananas.org/profile.php?do=editprofile

Scroll down till you see:Banana species and cultivars grown?
What kinds of bananas are you growing or have you previously grown?
Please take a moment and fill out the area with your list.

On the memberlist, you can search for what people have filled in there!
Click "Members List" from any page in the forum to get to the members list, then click "Search Members" - > "Advanced Search" and you will see this page show up:
http://www.bananas.org/memberlist.php?do=search

From there, you can type some letters of the kind your looking to match with people growing it, and presto!, they should show up.

Thanks to HarveyC for the suggestion, a really good suggestion, at that. Previoulsy, the only way to do this was to visit each page in the wiki and see who has pinned their location to the respective map for each and every kind they are growing. That's a very tedious task that few have learned how to do or have participated in doing! This way should proove much more efficient and useful.

Any questions or comments, post away!
Enjoy!

Wow, that was quick, Jarred! Thanks for adding this feature to an already great forum! :D

Only downside is that I am now envious of your very impressive collection! ;)

Everyone please fill yours out if you have not yet as we'll be using this field soon with some new integrations into the wiki (http://www.bananas.org/wiki/).

Thanks, Jarred, I'm always amazed at the effort you put into this site!!! Will the maps be updated automatically now based on the profile info?

Thats what I envision, it's tricky though.
Hopefully it will be automatic, if its too tricky it'll be optional with a 1 button click on the respective wiki page to add yourself to the list of growers.

One challenge I see are innocent mis-spellings and names new to the wiki in general. It is hard to beat the user-friendliness of the free-text input area in the user profile field: I would keep that. But internally, for both wiki-updates and profile display, you might want to split the user list into known and unknown "records". This might help you and the user as well.

Jarred, whatever direction you take on this we'll all appreciate it.

Once it is to your liking, perhaps an "other plants" field ... or even more daring: "other fruits and veggies" and "ornamentals" fields?

Yes exactly Richard those are things that, depending on the level of artificial intelligence that'll be coded in, will be what would be the tricky part of it all. Perhaps we'll use set names and convert whats there into those, and just allow new entries to utilize only those in the db, while allowing totally new entries (unknown to the db) to go in as well. It's very technical and the balance between user friendliness and even if the people want to be automatically added into the wiki pages are all things to consider.
Those are good suggestions regarding new profile fields, tyvm!
