Hi my name is Mike, I live in Indianapolis(Speedway actually) and my zone is 6a. Not great for tropical plants. I get six months out of my tropicals which have been elephant ears and Kanas. Last year I bought two Red banana plants at the local nursery. They were labeled Red Banana. For whatever research I did I believe the plants are called red Abyssinian. They are very good looking plants. This year I bought a labeled Japanese Banana which I'm guess its a Mussa Bajoo? It pretty clear that I'm still new at these plants but I'm learning fast. I even got a pup off of it and its growing well in a pot.

Last year and this year I dug up the red banana's and put them in a box for the winter. The other banana I'm gambling on is I used the air bubbles, straw, mulch and bags. To keep it warm, hopefully. I have pictures and plan to share, but I want to introduce myself first.

So lastly, tonight I just bought five seeds from Seedman. They are for a giant nepal banana ensete glaucum. I cant imagine it getting as big in six months but would like to try. Actual question is will these seeds give me five plants or will I be lucky to get one? will the give me some kind of write up on setting up the seeds?

Thank you for any info. I do plant to provide pictures

Welcome to forum! :D

Thats the Snow banana from Asia and its a bigger version of the Abyssinian banana. It grows very fast when its warm and its easy to grow from seed.
Since its tropical then it probaly wont like very much temperature variation while the seeds are germinating.

This is the method I learned to grow banana seeds:

1. Soak the seeds in warm water (more than 12 degrees C) for 24 hours. That gets them out of dormancy.
2. Fill a tray with seed compost.
3. Plant the seeds 1/4 inch deep and cover them.
4. Water throughly then drain excess water.
5. Put the tray in a polythene bag and seal it up.
6. Put the bagged tray in a warm place and wait.
7. Germination isnt predictable and it can take 1-6 months for germination.

Good luck.

My Ensete Glaucum grew to be 10 feet tall (Including leaves) the first year from seed, but alas it is no more, it flowered the second year and is pffffffffft. I had 1 out of 10 seeds germinate, I figured it would last at least several years before flowering but nope. But it did grow much faster than my Abyssinians. If I ever grow one again, I will just treat it as an annual, it stored very well under the house for winter just like the Abyssinians do, but it began to decline because of the flowering and was not worth growing the second year, I just ended up with a weird flowerstalk that didn't have time to open, while the plant around it looked terrible. But it was fun to grow while it lasted, and grew faster than any other Banana or relative that I have grown from seed.

how often should I water the seeds? This is all new to me. I'm use to planting plants already grown. I have wrapped a bag around the pot that has the seeds making a little greenhouse, but was curious on how often I should water? Thanks
