Glenn Stokes suggested that I tell you about the origin of the Seminole banana I gave him. I have collected plants from both new and old world rain forests. One of my collecting interests is within the Scitaminales. I'm really into gingers. Having lived in Miami I was aware of the robust bananas often found around the Seminole villages in the Everglades. Having eaten them many times I was aware that they were significantly different in both growth and fruit quality from the many bananas I encountered in my travels. Because these bananas were always associated with Seminole villages they were naturally referred to as "Seminole bananas". The fruit color tends to a peach or pink tone that doesn't seem consistent. The flavor is some what tart for a banana in a pleasing way. It seems to grow where many bananas suffer from nematode problems. The "Seminole" is a clonal variety that offers some unique qualities but until some genetic detective work is done its true relationship to other bananas must remain the subject of our discussions.
