I know that some Bananas pstems are used in cooking like Namwah, but what about Basjoo? I still got a green stem out here and thinking about eating it lol. Anybody ever die from Basjoo eating? lol

Well, I didn't get sick lol, but didn't eat much either, but I might not try it if I was allergic to latex, it has an interesting texture though.
Good to know. I know that they use pstem for curries in asia but wich one, i don't know. When time comes, I'll leave it to my worms in my composting bins. They'll probably enjoy it more than me. Thanks for taking one for the team!

If you ordered pstem at a restaurant, what wine would they recommend? They say there is a wine that compliments every meal. "I will have the Basjoo pstem. Can you recommend a bottle of wine?"
:08:
I'd go with the cheap local wine, iof there's any... There's probably no Michelin restaurant serving pstem... That being said, it doesn't mean that the restaurant serving it doesn't serve great food! But I don't drink alcohol so a "Château La Pompe" would do it...

Are you eating the leaf sheaths or peduncle?
The peduncle is kind of like eating water, it's great if you're thirsty.
I think it's also used to dissolve one of the types of kidney stones.

Yeah, I heard that too!

The green leaf sheaths, peeled the outer older ones off, had an interesting vegetable texture but again did not eat much, dont want anyone getting sick for any reason lol although I think its probably harmless. I did see banana blooms for sale in a Thai supermarket the other day to use for cooking, had my first Namwah fruit that day from there. I prepared the pstem similar to those in this link.

I am starting to get interested in eating some of the stuff I grow around here, I have tons of cannas, going to try roasting some of those this next year. Overwintered some ornamental sweet potato tubers under the house for a whole year lol, so going to try growing the more edible ones and storing until I need them.

Maybe cooking can improve the leaf sheaths but they're nasty raw. The floral stem is very tender and not at all unpleasant to eat raw.

I ate a bunch of dirt as a kid and probably still do; I often grab ice (with my unwashed hands) and water when I've been been getting my fingernails terribly dirty in the garden. Sound awful? Haven't had a cold in 10 years and only had the flu once; Mom was right.
A bit OT but all of you Yankees blessed with dandelions should be picking the buds, sauteing them in real butter and enjoying your free bounty. Alas, no dandelions here. Strange. I thought I'd never shed those "powder puff" weeds that were every perfect lawn-growers bane. But I miss them. Yummy!

Me to, plenty of dirt as a kid. Ate a little bit this last week. More in the form of mud. Splash, mouth open, you get the point. It's hard for me to get past the grittiness. Not really something you think of as a menu item.
Never tried the dandelions. Have plenty. I herd you can use the leaves in a salad? May me worth trying the buds in butter. Kat, maybe I can send you a nice one from the middle of my lawn.
We could start two new threads. Eating dirt, and eating dandelions.

The grit would drive me nuts; living in "sand land" I know when a speck crosses my lips and spit it out as well as I can which isn't easy. I'm able to swallow black compost smudges easily; they go down fine.
Do try the buds! I nibbled on leaves as a child and found them bitter; consequently I've never collected any for a salad or wasted ingredients trying to make them into wine. But the buds are really good! You can send a plant but I don't think it will grow here...
Start the threads; I'm in.

Another OT: I just tried rutabaga last night. For years I recalled that Green Acres episode where that was the crop recommended to save the valley's economy and wondered about them. I rarely found them in the store and always wax coated basketballs that were very pricey so I demurred. But last week I discovered one golf ball sized so I made the jump. Turnip past its prime but actually quite delicious roasted.

Kat, maybe hold off till spring on the plants. I will try to send plants and seeds at the same time. You can then report back on the better way to introduce dandelions to your yard.
I wonder how Santa's cookies would be sautéed in butter? Maybe a little onion mixed in.

Not many......he usually tags my house with red spray paint and leaves lumps of reindeer dooo dooo on the lawn.

I'm fairly certain that green bottled wonder was part of my first Singapore sling experience many years ago. Being a 17 year old freshman in a southern BYOB state has its advantages when others BYB (buy your bottle).
