View Full Version : Can it be a mistake of a seller or natural variety?

Last year I bought seeds of "Helen's hybrid" from an ebay source.

Four of them germinated, but as they grew a difference appeared. One of the bananas is purely green, while other three have red stripes like Sikkimensis red tiger on the leaves.

Can it be a mistake of a seller and a different seed in the pack, or Helen's hybrid can give various plants?

If some of these two does not like like Helen' s hybrid - any guesses of identification?

I will add some photos of both.

Just Googled Riga and it looks like a beautiful city. Seems as you have rather grim winter weather as we do in some parts of our country. I am not qualified to help with your issue but your pics are nice and your setup is really good. Good luck!:bananas_b

If you haven't looked in the Wiki, here's some photos for comparison:

Thank you, men for your replies.

Richard, I just checked the wiki. The three striped ones have some resemblance with Helen's hybrid, the question remains - what is the green one?

Thank you again.

Helen's hybrid is a hybrid between Musa Sikkimensis and Chini Champa. What you don't know is how many generations forward this set of seeds are from the original cross. These seeds will be open pollinated so what you have is probably still Helen's Hybrid, but displaying characteristics of different parent plants. I shouldn't worry about it and embrace the difference.

Thank you.

I guess this explanation is the one that works for my peace of mind:)
