When changing containers I had the opportunity to observe the roots.

Here are two photos of the same plant taken at different times.
Some factors

Air temp is 80+F.
Container is the same temperature as air temp. Container is in the shade.
Note the nice root structure.

Here is the same plant .
Air temp is 80+F
Container temp is 120-130F.
Half the container is in direct sun .
Note the distinct area where no roots grow.
Can you tell which side was in the sun?

Hi Mike,

this is an excellent observation and illustration, which confirms my experience, which
I was not able to demonstrate as clearly:

After I moved my ornata outside in full sun last year it withered. After I moved the
pot into shade, while leaving the top exposed, it recovered. :)

Mike, the excellent presentation has me convinced. My A'eA'e has done great in its pot but three others have had their pots in full all day have been :nanadrink:disappointing. Next year all go in the ground.

Hi Mike, that is the problem with posting photos out of Flickr. Some of mine
disappeared also, after I moved them within Flickr, when re-organizing there

You will have good luck with your plants in the ground
