From time to time there are events which pass most of us by without even knowing it......without looking up.
So as a passive astro observer I (we) members will update this thread as cool stuff happens above.
Tonight a super moon and eclipse all in one..

No I did not take any photos because the camera was not suited for this.
However there are many super high quality photos on the internet to view.
I like these kind of events because you can go outside and sit in a chair and watch it unfold.

So if your like me and have to commute to work in the dark in the morning...... look to the EASTt...You will see three planets in our solar system aligned in a row.
This does not matter where you are.......you will be able to pick them out
A rule of thumb is.......at dusk or dawn, the brightest NON TWINKLING objects in the sky are planets.
FACT: The first bright "stars" in the evening that one see's are usually a planet, as well as the last ones you see in the morning.

I used to sit on the roof of our house when I was a kid with my telescope........man it was cold lol. Coolest thing I saw was the Andromeda galaxy, and by accident, I was just moving the telescope around. It's actually very large when viewed compared to the planets but so faint it's hard to detect with the eye.

I was in the Smokies for this event and the view was hindered because of the heavy smoke from the wild fires in the Tennesee and Carolina region. The smoke halved the detail of the moon.

Cool thread. Wish I saw this earlier. Totally stoked about the solar eclipse. It's the most epic event since New Horizons made it's closest approach to the dwarf planet, Pluto, 14 July 2015. Btw, it will fly-by 2014 MU69 on 31 December 2018.
This will be the 1st solar eclipse to make landfall in the contiguous US since 1257 and the 1st solar eclipse visible here since 1979. The path of the moon and line of totality forms a line from Madras Oregon to Columbia South Carolina. So here, we just get 84% and the eclipse will last from 11:37 to 14:34 cdt, with a midpoint at 13:05. But it's a short trip north to the line of totality. Yeah, I totally want to be there, not here, lol.
The chances of this happening this nearby is about 1 in 370 years.
Always looking up... :D

I think you need to re-check your dates for Solar Eclipses in the US. I witnessed a total solar eclipse March 1970 in South Georgia; and another (angular) solar eclipse May 1984 in South Georgia.

My bad. Left some stuff out.
"Landfall in the US" = Can only be seen in the US.
Also, I was only talking total eclipses.
I wasn't here for that 7 March 1970 total eclipse - so this is my first - but I did google. The path only ran through Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina. It was mostly over the Gulf of Mexico and the ocean.
But hey, 2 more total eclipses can be seen here in 2024 and 2045 and I'll be watching. They'll be even closer than this one.
Still waiting for the 1st test launch of the new Angara heavy lift rocket. Will probaly happen from Plesetsk in Archangelsk and land in Kamchatka...

This is BIG.
If you like big bottle rockets....this is for you .
Last months central California folks saw the SpaceX shot from Vandenberg AFB.
What a treat to see a large rocket in low orbit.
For those who saw it, that is what we saw from Cape Kennedy during the space shuttle night time launches years ago.
The reflection off the Atlantic ocean was crisp and bright ..from 115 miles away.
At the end of this month in central Florida at Cape Canaveral SpaceX again
will be launching their largest and the WORLD's MOST POWERFUL ROCKET yet the
Spacex Falcon (http://www.spacex.com/falcon-heavy)
The glow will rival the space shuttle launch and will be seen for hundreds of miles from the launch site in Florida....

Actually, you should look down at the sidewalk for cracks, dog poo, and money. If you have normal peripheral vision, you will still see other people approaching.
About 5 years ago, Walgreens offered AARP members $0.01 per mile (in "award points" each worth $0.001) to walk for exercise. AARP had an image advertising this offer in which people were walking while looking ahead smiling. On the AARP forum, I wrote that you can find more money than that lying on the sidewalk but those people in the picture will miss it and step in dog poo. I walk 30 miles/week and I once found $17 and once found $20. I often find pennies but I don't bother to pick them up. Shame on me!

its been said; the people who wont pick up a penny don't need it. and the ones who wont pick up a penny tails up are the rich ones.
as for me if I pick up a penny no matter how it lays, I get to spend someone else's money. :08:

And check out that cresent moon(early am) while your at it.
Remember the first bright objects that appear after the sun goes down are planets.
Currently there are 3 easily seen planets at dusk.
Venus which is the one closest and brightest on the western horizon looks just like a mini cresent moon if viewed with binoculars.
